  1. Gave the 460 a run out in June....we drove from Cumbria to Venice non stop other than petrol {and the Eurotunnel of course }.....took 26 hours....whilst the car was fantastic... I still would have Loved to have done it in my old 203 thousand mile 400....we came back over the next 8 days through Europe....it was a great adventure....recommended :winky:
  2. My 96 400 would actually run very slightly cooler "on the gauge" when stationary or in slow traffic.....the big viscous fan is so over engineered....AC on or off... Good Luck with sorting it. ;)
  3. I was told by the Service Manager at Lexus the same thing about the No Budget for thr 400's....when I said the new 460 was noisier...he said it was not built with the aim of utter smoothness and quietness in mind lke the 400......my 460 is much harsher over bumps...despite Air. The transmission is jerky when cold...too many gears...5 would be plenty...brakes are graby and bad to judge at times....carpets are not as ....er....wooly ?.....leather on seats seems thin....stereo does not sound as good to me either.....and its Bleep Bleep "GONG" .... BLOODY BLEEP ! .. :tsktsk: But I admit I am growing to like it...it is a great looking car...I find myself staring at it on the driveway........but I was smitten at first drive wth the 400..... and I know I will spend the rest of my life regretting the change I made....I am a Sentimental old fool I know....I have enjoyd many cars over my near 30 years of driving... and I really thought I could'nt go wrong with a 460....I mean for Gods sake...its a Lexus LS460 !... But I now "KNOW" I "had" the Best car I ever owned....both in driving and working on it....{it was so beautifully put together}... typing this I feel like selling the 460 and going to get my 400 back....TONIGHT !....but ...when I stand on the step and look at the 460 I think.... " WOW what a car...are you an Idiot man ?....give it another few weeks and you'll be OK ".....
  4. The dealer is a good friend.....he is awaiting the parts for the front drivers side......bearing and hub......I spent big on the old girl recently Water pump Alternator Power steering pump and cam belts all done together.......all by Lexus Carlisle......I changed all fluids....even the diff !....I changed the oil and filter every 3000...I bought it with 120 on....New cats and centre exhaust as they were blowing around the flanges.....new EGR pipe. ....it has slight rust on one rear arch an around windscreen....but clear winkers front and rear from USA....proper D8Z,s....wheels refurbed at Blackpool... last winter I fitted new shocks and spring all round....new mounts for the springs too...new ball joints etc.....I even fed the bleedin leather once a month with Gliptone !....Odessy battery was 200 quid too. Just buy it pal....you will not find more mechanicaly sound one.
  5. Ahhha...thanks for the offer pal... The car has been to Lexus for the valve spring recall....I asked them to look for the rattle and they said it was a missing pad spring on the front right caliper... but as expected the noise is no different..... It does it with the brakes on so its not that anyway...but it is so obvious a sound I really thought I would sort it myself no worries....but I'm struggling now. Spoils the car.... But as I said before...460 is not as quiet as the old 400...idling or on motorway....which was a disapointment...Air suspension seems poor too in my opinion....more squeeks and rattles too....the 400 had none at all....too many gears....stereo not as good either lads. I have just got back from a 2800 mile roung trip to Italy in the 460....drove non stop to Venice in 26 hours from West Cumberland...so I now know the car well enough. In all Honesty.... If I could turn back the clock ...I would have put some bearings in the wheel hubs on the old 203.000 mile MK3 and keep her another 5 years very happy. My old car is in a delers for sale right now....I have thought about selling the 460 and getting her back...it was that good. Sory to any 460 owners out there....but my advise...keep your MK3/4s.
  6. My 10,000 Mile 2007 LS460 L has got a bad "squeeky" rattle from the front right hand wheel area...can't pinpoint it exactly..... either from under floor, wheel arch , or suspension .... loud enough for passengers to hear it... only happens on certain types of small to medium stutter bumps.... but very annoying on such a high end car....any ideas welcomed... :shutit:

  8. Been trying to fall in Love with this car as I did with my old Series 3 400...but I hate rattles and squeeks in a car of this calibre.... I have some wind noise which I have a cure for from the net....But I also have a bad squeeky rattle from the front right under the floor or wheel arch area....small rapid bumps make it worst...anyone on here had similar on their 460 Air Suspended Missile.? Thanks lads.
  9. Finally got the supposed "Dream Car"....07 460 SE L with only 10.000 miles on...I have a knock on front right suspension...rattling glove box ...and the car sometimes seems to steer itself while braking....tyres are good pressures etc...but badly cracked and perished....but plenty of tread...also the motor is much noisier when ticking over...sounds like my friends 300C diesel when sitting in traffic...not what you would exspect at all...my old 200.000 mile 400 is much quieter in all situations....including wind noise....you almost can't hear it at idle when warm... Also the 460s brakes seem very unpredictable...come on too much or too little and bad to judge...the old 400 is effortless to drive in comparison....all in all I am very disapointed... I fell in Love with the 400 after a drive in a friends and bought my own within a few weeks...and have done some 80.000 miles in her...and I think is the much better car...MUCH BETTER car... I am doing the only logical thing now I have bought it... and having the car checked over at the Lex dealers soon...and valve spring recall done which takes a week..[ engine out job }replacing the tyres etc...I will give the car a good chance...but will not be selling my 400 until I have had this 460 a few more weeks....I have already done aroung 400 miles...and I was glad to get back in the 400 today to be honest.... Sorry lads.
  10. I would like to be able to release the boot with the motor running.... B) I have many times wanted to let the engine warm up and then not unreasonably wanted to put something in the bleedin boot....switch engine off.....open boot....then more wear and tear on the old starter....nothing major....but very annoying safety nonsense :P
  11. I have been umming and arring over a 460 now they are under 25 for a low milage one...but the Engine out cylinder head work has put me off a lot. Talking to my Local Lexus dealer ...he said they had done ten 460s and awaiting one more...they only do one a week...the motor must come out and all the valve springs replaced....I suggested {as politely as possible} that the motor will never go back together or be installed like it was from the Factory in my experience {once they have been apart they are never the same }...he said the so called Mechanics { Technicians ? }take them home afterwards for evealuation... I had too many issues with Lexus doing a cam belt change on my 400...gave me it back with low gearbox oil...{ as it is lost when rad is removed etc } loose earth lead, and lost bolts for the engine cover ...they replaced one of them with a plastic numberplate nut ! My point being that if they can't do these thing with any competence what chance an engine out job on a 460...have you seen under that bonnet ! Sorry for going on a bit...
  12. I've asked this question on here before....I have a rough front when you spin the hub....wanted to change it out but was told you need to buy a compleete hub assembly off Lexus . The hub looked a nightmare to get off too...so I have left it to develop as they say....but do think about it when on longer drives.
  13. I have replaced the EGR pipe on my 96 400...but a friend who took his to 400 to Lexus for same thing was told there was two....? They also charged for dropping the GearBox and I managed it just removing the Driver side Cat. :P
  14. My friends has over 350 on his MK3 and still sweet...just discs pads shocks etc....he Loves it.
  15. Ebay.......you need to look for MK 1 MR2 type....these are the same fitting to the best of my memory.
  16. I doubt they will flush the transmission like the tutorial explains on here....it is a proper job to do....messy and takes a lot of fluid......doubt they will even drop the pan.... they will just suck out the fluid with their syphoning machine....and replace what they remove....not a proper change in my book....mixing new fluid with old makes no sense to me. Oil change for a hundred quid....bleedin cheek...do it yourself....its an hour at most first time...second time 30 minutes as your confidence grows.... just a fiddly job taking off the engine splash guard underneath. Cam belt is a good price ...let them do that and order yourself a couple of filters while your there....then off to Halford for some decent Oil....I use normal 20/50 mineral as stated in hand book....and change every 2000 miles...but I'm fussy with Oil. or you can go fancy and use a synthetic...but I dont like it...personally. By key do you mean the fob...you need to "hold" the button for a few seconds to release boot. Good Luck .
  17. Very much doubt water anywhere around the gearselector...I drove through major flooding....and had starter problems after that....seemed to be related to gearstick.... took transmission tunnel apart to look at connectors etc....[took all afternoon]...there is no way water will get into that part....mine was totally dry...very well sealed. Good Luck.
  18. Me again lads....done the discs and pads today.....but spun the hub and felt quite rough.....so now need to do the front wheel bearings....or it will drive me nuts.....nothing in the Tutorials...anyone done it ? can take assembly to Garage no problem....but how to remove hub ?.
  19. Had to replace my centre boxes and both cats due to rot....the system is all Stainless except the flanges...these are mild steel weleded to the stainless tubes and boxes...so the flanges rot away... all you can do is replace the system parts as the flanges are as said welded on...the only thing I thought of was to have flanges made up in Stainless and cut the old ones off and weld on the new ones....but looking at the job and thinking of how you would get it all to line up as good as standard ?....I thought the better of it and bit the bullet.... Good Luck ;)
  20. Got it done lads......oor lass helped me and we spent this afternoon in sub zero temperatures to finish both sides....new springs struts and discs while I was in there. Looking forward to a drive tomorrow to see what its like. Thanks for replies fellas.
  21. Turned out I also broke the lower coil on the spring....so the spring broke and took out the lower seat too....cold weather and 198.000 miles ?.... I have bought both sides and will give it a go over the wekend... £132 each for the stuts from Lexus...£127 per spring....soon adds up eh ?.... What a miss it has been over the last week....
  22. Travelling at around 65 and suddenly a BIG Bang.....front of car dropped suddenly and I thought I'd had a blow out....but there was no loss of control and no noises... pulled over and front of car was almost totally collapsed on to the front tyres....front right tyre was just clearing the inner arch protector....broken spring me thinks..... so limped home at 40 with the car sniffing the ground like Pimp Daddys Chrome wheeler....when I got home I investigated and found the lower spring SEAT had come away fron the strut body !... bottom of spring was resting on the track control arm.... there seemed to be no rust that I could tell....seemed a major failure that I've not seen since my TR8 days.... Anyone had this happen ?.....and is it an easy removal DIY proposition ?....looks easy enough on the tutorials....but why split the ball joint on the upper wishbone ?... is actual damper an insert ?....or complete unit with shock body ? Thanks again lads !
