  1. Think you'll find you get it on the new S Class as well (You certainly do on the new A- Class). It uses a CVT gearbox that's driven by a belt that's impregnated with titanium particles. MB claim it is more robust than a conventional gearbox (well they would wouldn't they).

One thing is for sure though... the gear changes will be silky smooth... because there aren't any !! :D

  2. ANY modification that is not the manufacturers standard spec should be declared to you insurance company.

(Even changing the alloys for non Lexus types etc). Their argument will be that they would rate the risk differently if the vehicle is deemed to be more 'attractive' to a thief due to the aesthetic change in appearance !!

    You have been warned...

  3. Perhaps I can add somethng to this....

The new GS DOES have a brake hold on hills but it depends on how steep the hill is before it kicks in. If it's just a slight incline it works the sameway as all auto boxes and the torque converter slips and provides enough drag for you to move your foot from the brake to the accelerator pedal. When you are on a steep hill and you come to a complete stop and lift your foot from the brake pedal, the car senses that it is about to rollbackwards and applies the brakes. Ths is immediately cancelled as you push the accelerator.

I have tied this on several occasions on differing inclines (with nothing behind me just in case :D ) and it has worked each time I have been on a steep(ish) hill.

I can't speak for the new IS as I have never driven one.

  4. I would like to an electronic parking brake (where you just press a button to engage the hand brake) as I am starting to find the foot break a pain in the @ss. My other halfs Disco has this feature and I think it's very cool.

Why bother with the parking brake?... I have had my GS for 5 months now and have NEVER used the parking brake - ONCE. Come to think of it I have had auto cars for 10 years now and don't thing I've ever applied the handbrake/parking brake in any of them !! - Once you stick it in park the transmissions locked so your car aint going anywhere...

  5. Although it's too late in this case...

If you have dried on birdy pooh.... the best way to get it off is to soak a cloth in warm water, gently wring it out and then cover the birdy pooh with the cloth and leave it for 10 minutes.

This will soften it and then make getting rid of the crusty remains a lot easier and a lot less of a scratch experience !!

  6. Thanks. Also looked at the links mentioned on car care and in particular black paint with "swirls". Now seriously considering asking the dealer to change the spec of my car to silver, hopefully that won't affect the lead time toooooooooo much, next stumbling block is to get the wife to agree to spend more money

Noooooooooooooo... Don't change the colour !! Although black takes some looking after it is quite simply THE BEST colour when it's clean !! :D :D

  7. Get yourself a Porter Cable along with some SFX 1 (If things get bad !!) SFX2 and SFX 3 along with a set of 5 or 6 inch pads. I'd recommend Klasse (or the UK equiv Carlack). Don't bother with the All in one as you wont need it on a brand new paint. I Porter Cabled the entire car with SFX 3 and then started to layer on the SG. It's then a personal choice whether you top off with a good Wax or not.

I have an Astral Black GS from new in March this year and it looks better than when I picked it up from the dealers !! So much so that people comment on it when it's parked up !

A garage makes a big difference as well :P

Happy polishing and enjoy the new motor...

  8. Or even simpler (and cheaper)..

Just tell your Son/daughter NOT TO TOUCH THE WINDOW SWITCH !!

My kids have known electric windows in our cars from birth (they are now 20 years old and 18 years old) and never ONCE did they attempt to use the window switch without permission !

Yep - I'm 'Victorian Dad'... but they did as they were told.

Threaten them with chopping their hands off if they dare to touch the switch !!

  9. Although it's annoying it is a legal requirement.

Yes it can be overidden but you will find you will not get to the Map screen any quicker as the system is booting. If you sit in the car in a quiet garage and fire up the ignition with climate and audio off and the glove compartment open you will hear the DVD spin up and the system going through it's boot sequence.

    Cheers

  10. That hard drive just aint gonna be big enough if it's gonna do a lot of Video editing !!

Not at a Gig every 5 and a half minutes for standard resolution DV !! If it's going to house an OS and all the usual rubbish as well as the editing software and the likes of After Effects 250 gig will get eaten very quickly.

If they move into HD editing watch the gigs disappear at an alarming rate !!

    Just my two pennyworth
