  1. Hi guys as title suggests my warranty is up in March 2012. I have a new pair of 18" alloya and tyres ready to go. if I put them on will they tell me any issues with suspension is not covered?

    Thanks

As long as they are within Lexus spec then no - HOWEVER.... Changing wheels CAN affect your insurance (Anything that makes the car more attractive to a thief etc) and should be disclosed to your insurance company.

  2. Hmmmm... not a bad job but he should also have removed the fuel filler cap and given a good "wash" to the neck of the fuel pipe.

I have to say it's not often I'm speechless but I watched this video in disbelief !! I'm guessing it's some kind of revenge job (or the owner of the vehicle opted for the cheap Valet 'A' for a fiver !!

  3. Nice timing for you.

Can you see why it stopped working now its open to view?

No can't really see in it split open then sort of sprung back but I can see it is full of dead pidgeon so I decided not not to go any further.

2 new complete mirrors fitted today by the excelent Lexus Milton Keynes Centre, I think Paul said about £800, glad I extended the warranty !!!

Yup - I had passenger one done under warranty a while back - think they said it would have cost around £420 all in so £800 for the two seems about right!

  4. Interesting one this....

Check your policy VERY carefully..... It probably says as a condition a tracker must be fitted to the vehicle. I doubt it specifies you check it is functioning on a regular basis. (Who would)

In the event of a theft, if it was found that the tracker wasn't working then I'd like to see an insurer stand up in court and argue you have no coverage because you should have know your tracker was faulty!

Insurers will take your money faster than Richard Turpin but will try everything to wriggle out of paying a claim.

If your policy doesn't stipulate that regular tests are made to establish a working tracker is in situ then the policy is ambiguous and the wording will be construed in favour of the assured. It is up the the insurers to come up with a watertight wording. Since an individual cannot be deemed as a sophisticated assured and I'm assuming you don't have your own risk manager working for you I wouldn't worry too much in the interim until you get it fixed.

I would write back to Richard Turpin Ins Co and politely point out that since their policy is ambiguous you do not accept their terms of no theft coverage in the interim and insist that cover is reinstated for the next 14 days. Since there is no indication when a tracker goes faulty you could not be reasonably aware that the equipment had developed a fault! If the device gave out a signal or fault code then that would be a different matter, but as it stands Richard Turpin Ins Co are just trying to pull a fast one.

  5. Try here as well (even cheaper)..... Around about 29p a Battery. I have bought from this buyer before and can recommend them.

The batteries come from Eunicell and are a large Battery manufacturer in China --> Eunicell

If purchased in cartons of 1,000 (which obviously Lexus/Toyota do) the price comes down much more (around 9p a battery). So assuming the buying power of Lexus they are making somewhere in the region of 10,000% profit !!!

Do yourself a favour and get them from eBay. The bats last exactly the same time as the ones the dealers fit and at 29p a Battery you can afford to replace them once a year anyway!

  6. Hi Sir John,

Love the explanation but it does require a bit of clarification.

The Scots who left and traveled South, and indeed all over the world, didn't do it to look for work. They were actually forced off the land by a chap called "Butcher Cumberland" and the government who sat in Westminster. They would have been quite happy to stay there.

Rant over and apologies for adding stuff not related to the thread.

    Tc (a proud Scot)

    Hi Thunderchild,

I stand corrected on the reason for the migration. Absolutely apalling treatment of the working classes I agree.

Glad you liked the explaination in general though, which of course, is all sound scientific stuff.

JW (proud to english working class) Bye thee ek!

Now, where did i put that powdered water?

Please also don't forget (and this is an important factor in your improving mpg).... there are far more people in the UK than a few years ago and so they are all using up valuable air when they breath. This means there is far less air around than there used to be so less wind resistance on your Lexus - thus ...more MPG !!! Simples.

  7. ....... middle lane hogs(should be pulled to the side of the road & shot on the spot) .........

Oh... Oh.... I'm with you on this one however...... I do feel your suggestion on the treatment of these offenders a little bit too......SOFT !!

I would rather see middle lane hogs pulled over to the side of the road, have their vehicle torched in front of them (maybe even have them forced at gunpoint to pour petrol over their own vehicle and strike the match)..... oh... and THEN shoot them !

  8. <p>Don’t you hate it when you go shopping and you park your car in a safe place (in the corner of the store car park, so far you almost have to catch a bus to the store) and then you come back and your car has been scratched?? Or on your return you find a half empty car park and someone in an old beat up car parked next to you? You think to yourself, why park there and not in the other thousand spaces availale? GRR LOL</p>

YUP !!!

  9. <p>Has anyone had their sat nav take them on a merry go round and take you miles off course? or is your sat nav unit reliable? if it is reliable which Sat Nav unit do you have ? Aftermarket or factory fitted?</p>

Never in six years has it failed to get me where I need to go or let me down by taking me via Iraq or something daft. That includes it performing flawlessly after disembarking the Eurostar and driving in Frenchland. The other end took about 8 - 10 seconds to get a fix once I got off the train. I actually thought there was a problem as it has never taken any time to get a fix previously but then it was switched off in blighty and then powered up across a country border so can't complain really.

    Oh... btw... factory fitted unit.

  10. I don't think the tyre pressure monitoring system is an MOT item the only dash light checked is for the SRS which should illuminate and extinguish a few seconds later and the rear fog light tell tale light.

You may be right - I'm not sure, but I was told a while back that any warning light constantly illuminated on the dash is a failure..... have never tested the theory though !

  11. Hi. Wonder if anyone can help me with this...?

I have recently bought a gs450h (great car by the way) and the low tyre warning has been irrating the hell out of me. I have set all the tyres to the correct pressures and tried to initialise, using the reset button under the dash, but this low tyre warning keeps coming on!

So I had a closer look at the wheels today and noticed one of the wheels has a rubber valve stem whilst the other 3 wheels have metal ones... Am I missing a tpms valve? Could this be the reason for my constant low tyre warning?

    Many thanks.

Yep that would be it. they should be aluminium

Looks like someone had problems with one of the sensors and didn’t want to spend £100+ replacing it and just put a standard valve in its place. If you brought it from a dealer the I would take it back.

why did you buy the car in the first place with the warning light on?

Yes - also.... how did it get an MOT as I believe it's a failure if a warning light is illuminated on the dash!

  12. Interesting post - That's why I always do my insurance over the phone and when the person asks me "What value is your vehicle?" I always say "It doesn't matter"

That always gives them the a*se - I say "Look your going to flat rate the vehicle anyway so just put in 'market value' in the value field of your silly software"

They always go into one and say "blah, blah, I have to have a value blah blah blah", so it really doesn't matter what you value your car at, in the event of a TL you will only ever get back market value (unless you have an agreed value policy)

Oh.... I do the same when I trade in my cars in as well. When they start digging out the Glasses Guide and saying "Ahhh, well, yes you see that colour isn't very popular and if it was the one with go-faster purple wheels I could give you £1million pound for it and....." I always just say... "Don't care a jot what you give me for my car... shall we say £1". All I'm interested in the price to change. If they wont give me the discount I want, I walk away no matter how good the car is.

  13. Thanks parthiban, I wasn't aware of it, so I'll leave it on next time and see if it goes into outside air after a few mins, thankyou.

Also if the IS is like the GS the recirculation function effectivly has 3 modes. Outside air, recirculation and auto. It needs to be on auto.

So if you put your climate control into auto mode and set your temperature and put your recirculation mode into auto as well as parthiban says, the system should switch to outside air when it senses the conditions are right.

Bare in mine though that the system will also stay in recirculation or switch to recirculation mode if you are driving in heavy traffic as it senses the crap in the atmosphere and shuts you off from all those nasty pollutants :P .... Clever things these Loxotas !!!

  14. using the parking brake (note spelling) is surely a legal requirement not a choice?

I think you'll find stopping at red traffic lights is a legal requirement as well but it seems not many people bother any more (especially if they're on a bicycle !)

Since our police force is now reduced to a couple of bobbies that patrol an area the size of Lincolnshire I haven't seen too many plod go round a car park in say Alton Towers or a branch of Ikea and then systematically rock each one to determine whether the parking brake has been applied in each case.

(I'm still worried about next doors budgie though !!)

  15. To quote

"The parking pawl locks the transmission's output shaft to the transmission casing by engaging a pawl (a pin) that engages in a notched wheel on the shaft, stopping it (and thus the driven wheels) from rotating.

Most vehicle manufacturers and auto mechanics do not recommend using the transmission's parking pawl as the sole means of securing a parked vehicle, instead recommending it should only be engaged after first applying the vehicle's parking brake. Constant use of only the parking pawl, especially when parking on a steep incline, means that driveline components, and transmission internals, are kept constantly under stress, and can cause wear and eventual failure of the parking pawl or transmission linkage. The pawl might also fail or break if the vehicle is pushed with sufficient force, if the parking brake is not firmly engaged. Replacement can be an expensive operation since it generally requires removing the transmission from the car.

It is highly inadvisable to use the parking pawl to stop a vehicle in motion. Modern parking pawls are connected to a safety mechanism that prevents the pawl from engaging unless the vehicle is stopped first. The pawl mechanism is generally not strong enough to stop a vehicle in motion, if it engages at all. Under that much stress, the pawl may simply break off in the transmission, leading to costly repairs."

PAH !!.... Like I said... destruction of the world is nigh !..... My gearbox will explode and blind people six streets away, the economy will go into global meltdown and the next door neighbors budgie will die !!

  16. Never used the parking brake...... Never have never will.

As I said in my other post:......

That's what 'P' is for on the selector :hehe: :hehe: :hehe:

Have had automatics for going on 16 years and 6 cars and have never once used a parking brake. 'P' locks the gearbox and it aint going anywhere with it in that position!

Yes, yes... before the human rights brigade get on my case and say how dangerous that is and how the Devil will emerge from Hell and engulf me in flames of wrath, and how if I do this my gearbox might explode into a million pieces and cause oil to leak out which will set off a pollution disaster of biblical proportions and kill all the polar bears and tilt the earth of it's axis and we will all freeze to death in a nuclear winter....... I don't care !!

Have never had a problem, with mine, anyone elses or hire cars. What was the question again?... Oh yeah... parking brakes.. Nope.... don't use em

  17. I'll add another one......

    9. What's a parking brake?
