Oh My Lord!! I was so upset when I first read this that I jumped straight on the phone to the garage that "I" suggested. David called me back and I was so glad that I rang... *Getting your timing belt replaced is a nerve wracking experience as you know its a big deal if it goes wrong. I think in the past this has lead me to a little paranoia myself. Took me a while to accept that I could get it done at a local garage at a fraction of the price and still have it work out ok... * I had been worried that I had sent a lamb to the slaughter (unwittingly) through my well intentioned recomendation. I was gutted that I had in part led to the destruction of your Lexus. Imagine my relief when they the told me they had firstly spent 6 hours on your car for the price of 4. Then lent you another car today while they diagnosed that you had infact blown a single fuse which they replaced, putting humpty-dumpty back together again. Your car is ready for you. I'm glad you published this though as I'd hate to have not known. Maybe the fuse blew whilst with them but apparently Simon who worked on your car (as he did mine) pointed out the dash lights as he moved the car into the bay. So it could have just been bad timing... If you'll exuse the pun. Ps. the throttle associated thud sounds like drive train picking up slack. Seeing as its at the other end of the car than the one they were working on I would be inclined to suggest unrelated... Or did I miss-read your post and you were not actually suggesting that it was related to the trip to the garage? -

drivers seat looks loads better than several 130k examples I've seen!

Did you have any joy with them? -
looks like a beast! Having read about these cars before I'd be inclind to accept its somewhere around 2000bhp. How long it could hold it for is another question. And surely there is no harm in them posting the rolling road reports. Oh yeah... not many rolling roads will handle over 1000 bhp never mind 2.

Spark Plugs
Shaft replied to lexdog400's topic in LS 400 / Lexus LS 430 / Lexus LS 460 / Lexus 600h / Lexus 500h Club
They could but my first call would be MAF sensor, Coil Packs, HT Leads. Have you pulled a plug and looked at the colour and condition? And is the pressure even on both exhausts? might be build up of backpressure for failed system/cat... -
checked the seat Maneesh. heard about that one too, in other thread. with the best will in the world, unless you whole family drive your LS400 you should only need to set the seat once and then drive the car for the rest of your natural born days. why the need for all the motors...? Thats it. I want this LS400 to be the car to take me to the end of my long octogenarian at least life. I think it would be a great testemony to TOyota. I know a guy in the US who has had one for 16 years. Only put 2 sets of brakes and an air conditioning unit on it outside of normal servicing.... Reckons its the best car he owns. I should clarify that, he has 44 cars. most recent purchase, a bentley converetible. So he does rate it very highly. If you can maintain one I can't see why you'd have anything else. Thats it. I'm having one! Period.

Seen three is two week: 1, 211k felt and drove spot on. flickering speedo needle and misty air con readout. otherwise excellent for the money. 94 on L £1595 ono (£1350 me thinks...) 2, 149k up at £2595 but when I get to the garage its "abandoned" round the back. no mot or tax not been moved in "a while" green ***** growing on the window seals... £1700 to take it away running, no thanks. 95 on P/P 3, THE BEST YET (for comedy) 93k reg at £1995. 130k Confirmed mileage. Drivers seat fell so unsprunge the previous owners must have been big daddy! ( any one remember Shirley Crabtree?) He tells me the car is straight, he checked EVERYTHING OUT as he bought it for himself, never gets chance to drive it though as he's a trader... business been around 27 years,... Starts it with jump leads and it sounds nice! all elctrics seem fine. under bonnet I see coolant dripping at alarming rate. (yes I tasted it to check it was coolant and not off the AC compressor or anything...) He says, "oh, that's the overflow, don't worry." I say, "Nope, its leaking from the bodged fibreglass repair to the corner nearest the engine, look here.." and point it out to him, on the car that he claims to have driven to London in twice and to have checked over himself as he wanted to keep it.... He offered to get it repaired so I could drive it next wednesday and buy it if I like it, no obligation ( of course) I find it brassy to say the least that he would tell me having taken over a business established for 27 years he was unable to detect a bodged repair on a coolant res that was ****** out blue juice... Did not inspire confidence... Am I being too picky for the money. At this rate I want to either go £1300 on the 211k example or buy the 520iSE I saw yesterday with the airbag light problem fixed... at £3300... I had a bad dream about the car but I am still interested in it. 78k halo lights upgrade, full leather... T&T... Help me keep it Lexus..

Nice little car. thirsty as an LS400 though. Without the power or refinement. Got lots of toys in it though for a car in that bracket. As for looking distinctive, ask yourself if you are happy sharing rear lights with just about every car that has ever been to a sunday night cruise! Sorry, couldn't resist. Everyone calls them lexus lights when they are only IS200 and Altezza lights. All the bigger lexus cars have conventional lights and show no sign of following the IS in the 2007 line up... message there, methinks.

Yeah I thought I read about a million mile LS400 but maybe it was that 550k one. the bloke was stood by it and his new one was in the back ground and his wife was having the old one. Does that ring a bell??
-
yep... that was my thinking. It is waht the call in the trade I think "an honest car". At least you know what has been done, where and when. I thought it interesting that even though it was posted that £1 more would buy the car, nobody bid that single pound over to actually own it. fear factor I guess... My hunt continues... no rush, rather get the right car.

Hi All. I found a 236,000 mile Lexus LS400 for sale and I could have had it for £2601. It seems to me (with full lexus history every job done at the dealer, new suspension, cam belts plugs etc... ) a decent ride for the cash. Mileage puts some folk off but what kind of mileage are your longer serving cars showing and have they been trouble free thus far? Looking forward to your feedback. Shaft

Other than the big jobs mentioned in my second post on this thread, what big jobs might a perspective owner keep an eye out for??

personally its too far to travel for me. but I thought some people here might find it attractive... Maybe thats presumptious of me, given the responses to date. Woops.... personally its too far to travel for me. but I thought some people here might find it attractive... Maybe thats presumptious of me, given the responses to date. Woops....

full suspension overhaul at 182k full cambelt service at 182k last major service at 220k. Sheafs of bills to prove work been done and all lexus dealer bills. I think it strange that you suspect this is a lemon given that i has been fully maintained not just serviced, and all at a dealer therfore carrying the balance of the dealer warranty on parts and labour. Just what excatly would it have to look like to be seen as a bargain here? I thought for the money it was not bad. Had more spent on it in the last 60k than double the asking price. To me that seems a realistic good deal.

check this out!! Bargain lex on ebay here! I think it might be worth the punt!

Hi all, Great forum. Couldn't find a a wanted section though so thought I would post this here: I'm looking for an early/mid 90's LS400 for running around in for a year, maybe two. I'm looking for an honesy car that will do 20k a year with good servicing and will feel nice to drive. I have seem some on the market from a grand upwards and would like to buy the best available. not in a rush. but would like to have a car in the next 6-8 weeks say... Anyone know of anything up for grabs? Cheers, Shaft.

If you want to pop over to Bradford there is a great garage called First Stop Drive in. They have done full service and cambelt/waterpump on my last Lexus... Very capable and "northern" rates... Ask for David when you ring and tell him you were refered by a man who had just had his engine and turbo replaced there. He'll know who you mean... number is 01274 596829 -

At that money pluss labour you could see an INsurance firm writing the car off... and it being offered at very reasonable money back to the buyer.... or me!!
