  1. When the SD1 finished production the Police bought and stockplied the remaining cars available but rumor has it they were told the public wouldn't tolerate unjustified expenditure and even though they had got them cheap they were to pretend to wind windows down by hand...on models fitted with electric windows :o ! However this is just rumor and could be utter nonsense, the point being money is tight and Lexus has a name for being very expensive (well worth it for the quality though) and parked next to a BMW of simular price it still LOOKS more expensive (sorry to any Bimmer owners). Its all about the perception of how tax money is spent I'm afraid.
  2. Has anyone changed their leads and kept the old ones for spares that can help me? I'm after No 4 lead as the wire came out on mine and the plastic body was none to good either. They are the same on MKIIs and MKIIIs as well, I've changed plugs, caps, arms and one coil. Holidays are coming up and I really can't afford to fork out for a new set for a few weeks, thanks Gareth
  3. Been doing some research on this whole back end/cruiseing in lanes/not stopping at 40 in the snow phenomenon and it turns out to be down to one common fault..."the nut behind the wheel" I was told.... I've taken a large spanner and removed the retaining nut,I'm just off for a 120 MPH test drive, I'll let you know how it goes :D
  4. Getting back to this,I've given the coil a good test....it's dead :( New one on order only cost @£20 so again not the end of the world, just for interest I thopught I'd post a pic of the state of the rotor arm. Should be imterestig to see how it runs afterwards as it was pretty quick before.
  5. This has become a regular topic on the SD1 forum I'm on aswell as of late,All I can say is that there is one guy who wouldn't fit a bulb on his car without a weeks spec checking (such is the level of detail on his 4 year rebuild) and all he will use is the bilt hamber DYNAX stuff....There has been mention of waxoil coming off very badly in recent independant tests, that said I would imagine anything would be better than nothing and regularly applying would make even the cheapest underseal reasonable.
  6. Thought I'd add a Celsior thats still got its Badge on the grill
  7. Cheers lads, I'll have a search now...I was in a bit of a panic really, car cost next to :tsktsk: all so don't want to spend megabucks as I'm putting aside money for a MKIII/MKIV next year. I've fallen for the idea of a LS as a daily driver,I can't praise the car high enough to anyone who'll listen :winky:
  8. Definitely going in my Favorites, nice easy to use site (one of the to get my Jap import right from the REG alone), both caps and both rotors for an all in including VAT and delivery for £32.50...Thats £22.01 cheaper than I've been quoted for one cap on its own! Again, Thank You Phil Gareth
  9. Sorry I didn't respond earlier, the phone rang and I had to go out. I've not checked the coil out put as the rotor arm is so fried its going to need to be changed no matter what,I'm planning to change the plugs same time so will check they spark well as it all gets fitted back together.
  10. Anyone got a good supplier of Dizzy caps and Rotor arms cheap...Lexus dealer is shut until Tuesday for a price and an internet search shows up mostly US parts, local parts supply is quoting me a silly £54.51 per cap and no rotor arm available. I've suffered the same fate as others, red hot exhausts and missing like crazy, followed my first instincts prior to a search and pulled a cap to find medium wear but a rotor that looks like its been in a fire for 30 secs then stamped on. Looks like the last owner could only get caps as well, ;)
  11. Its been a couple of years since I took the SD1 out in the snow (it's in the garage being converted to a 4.6) but if memory serves it wasn't too terrifing, just silghtly. It would start just fine in winter, summer was the problem lol, thats why I've fitted Megasquirt and coil packs :winky: Back on topic,my wife's Galant V6 did a wonderful job in the snow,(better than some local blokes Frontera) and the LS got a week off...I did miss it though and its SOOOOO nice to have it back. :D
  12. I have to say, I've owned/driven quite a few rear wheel drive cars over the years and the LS is the probably the worst car I have ever driven in the snow (fortunatly its a very nice car to drive without snow)...Guess I'll have to by a couple of pairs of autosocks as I can't see me giving up the Lexus for the sake of a few weeks of bad weather a year! This year I ALMOST lost an artic down a steep slope (trailer was all over the place) and my main thought was "bet the Lexus wouldn't make it down here" having tried a shallower slope in it earlier that day and given up when it slid sidewards and needing to be pushed into the curb with the help of passers by. One of the best cars in the snow mind was a 2.8 Granada 4X4 Turbo running high boost....I passed Range Rovers stuck up hills while still having all four wheels spinning like mad.
  13. I have to agree with you there, given the snow recently I left the LS in my street and took my Galant out to work....it was like trying to find my way in the dark with a candle by comparison!
  14. I thought you weren't legally allowed to buy a Jag unless you produced your pension slip! Joseph Wilson Swan had a working light bulb in 1860....Edisons 1879 patent was for "Improvement In Electric Lights",by the time he was selling his first bulbs Swan's house was alight with his own bulbs running off Hydro Electric power!
  15. How reasonable did the Jag compair? Never been a fan of them but it would be nice to know.
  16. Sorry to revive an old thread (bit of a newbie thing to do I know),I really should have read this post before attempting this today....Not that I've done anything wrong but I did try to take a sidelight off by hand and damn near lost a fingernail in the process :tsktsk: . After plenty of blood and swearing work continued and as you say the sidelights really do look yellow soI took a trip to the local accessories shop (without sidelights in) and got myself a cheap set of 501 L.E.D.s Really finish it off in my mind what do you think? Sorry about picture quality I had to use my iPhone as it was all I had on me.
  17. Thanks for the warm greetings folks,I think got quite lucky with the car to be honest...Cost me a meer 400 beer tokens (it's on a private plate I'm told is worth around £300).It's recently had a timing belt (got receipt and sticker fitted), brand new battery and decent tyres. It was missing a cd magazine but eBay sorted that for less than £20. I've been viewing the forum for a few days and today discovered the cds go in upside down :duh: ... I have to say I'm VERY impressed with the sound quality! It would be nice to hear a different radio station to Radio Two though (especally after Terry Wogan leaves ) anyne got any good tips on expanding the radios frequency range? I've been deciding what to do with the badges as a previous owner has fitted (badly) Lexus badges on the back and left the toyota badges on the front (also got them on the wheels, steering wheel etc) and have decided to refit the standard Celsior badges if for no other reason than to tidy it up a bit. Its done nothing but rain since I bought it so the only pic I have is off eBay You may regret saying that once I get started asking Steve One thing I will ask (though I think I already know the answer) did they ever fit a Manual 'box to a Celsior/LS400?
  18. I needed a replacement car to ferry me back and for to work (bad timing financially, christmas coming up, work cutting out everyones overtime... etc). Had to fufill three requirements 1. Reasonably big engine 2. REAR wheel drive (absolute must, my old 2.5 v6 Galant was quick but the front wheels would spin at the mention of throttle) 3. Had to be cheap to buy (as I say Xmas and all that) The main problem is I don't like B.M.Ws (driven a few when I worked in a garage and they are just not me) and didn't really fancy a Merc, this causes a few problems when you consider almost no-one makes rear wheel drives anymore (front wheel is cheaper to make). I looked at a few things when a mate recomended an LS400 as being my sort of thing... Bit of looking around and I've ended up with a nice Toyota Celsior with a Lexus badge stuck on the back All in all I'm very pleased with it (it's got a few minor faults but it is a '91 after all). I'm sure I will end up picking a few brains here sooner or later but for now I thought I'd say hello.
