An O2 sensor can fail in a variety of ways, some affecting the petrol engine more than others. Typically it will slightly affect the efficiency of the engine. Replacement is normally easy, you just need to have the correct split socket, especially designed for an O2 sensor, and use the anti-seize compound that comes with the new sensor on the thread so it can be removed in the future.

To my knowledge no it wouldn't. You should only get a check engine light as a result of an O2 sensor faulty however I've seen other engine only issues cause a hybrid warning so I cannot rule out the possibility completely. You really need to get the error code(s) to fully understand and if you have a flat or weak aux Battery (standard 12v car battery) you can get all sorts of spurious errors which just need to be cleared.
