I don't think when I came up here as a kid to cut peat I realised how beautiful it was and how lucky I was to grow up in such a place. Apart from a number of new houses down in the valley nothing much appears to have changed in 60 years.

Wish you were here..jpg

I came across this and was left lost for words.

"

***** Hyland and Ray Campbell after a fight in 1913. It lasted 110 rounds, 7 hr 19 min (9:15 p.m.-4:34 a.m.), and was declared a no contest (later changed to a draw).
The longest fight in history"
I cannot conceive how that must have felt physically and mentally.

It isn't only boxers who are not quite has tough and resilient these days.

Hows this for a commentary on the wood used to build your home. No words needed.

Talking about quality and value for money -  This is from a local restaurant in the South of France near where we lived, from their website recently. Includes a quarter litre of GOOD local house wine. You would be lucky to get away with the equivalent of €20 over here and that would not be fresh local food but would include a glass of the most awful mass produced plonk.

1/4 ltr ,or 500 mls is 2 large size glasses. These days I always end up paying £20 to £30 per bottle so you are on the money with that statement. That lot above for 13E is just ridiculous and I mean that in the very best way ! Lets face it this country it has become fairly pricy for a number of things that we like to do. food , drink, transport. I mean I feel my socialist leaning cells about ready to declare a revolution. Down with capitalism I say (if I am paying for it 😄 )

Sir Stephen …… socialism to the fore …… landed gentrification ( the Sir bit, like Starmer 🤣 ) having to drive two Old Bangers rather than a newer car that most people can afford to drive these days ……: impoverished in one’s Golden Years having to stand at a petrol pump emptying your wallet ( again ) rather than just the simplest of plug in and go car technology ……. how age has crept up on one …… leaning on your social(ist) principles ……. I think I’m rather more conservative running my old bangers in a more social(ist) way 😇 ……. Old fossil’s fuels forever 😂

When we were there the menu was €9.50 but that's inflation for you. Another local place - Olargues - Fresh trout from the river Orb with salad and chips for €7.50. Another place - set dinner - no choice, you get what you get but is usually duck breast or chicken or guinea fowl or bavette steak all beautifully done with gratin dauphinois potatoes and mange tout peas including wine quarter litre and dessert all for €11.50 - Restaurant Lou Castel in Nages. Just checked tripadvisor and they have gone up market and charge about €20 now for a choice of dishes.

Doesn't time fly when you are having fun?

As I was reminded upon receipt from DVLA of a need to re apply for my driving licence.

Compete with photo now of course. Wife took one for me and I swear I have no idea who this old geezer is who is impersonating me. 50 years leaves a mark. However, wear it with pride I say to which end I updated my avatar although I dare say you can hardly tell (sic).

You'll know you have maxed out when DVLA send back your application with a one line response "You're kidding right".
