Ls400 Overheating

Anyone there can help?

I drive LS400 1990, it's a great car.

Last week I detected a coolant smell, opened the hood and noticed some leak from the cap of the coolant plastic container. I took it to the dealer who told me that the switch on top of the container is bad and that I should replace it ($120.00).

I told them I'll think about it I had no urgency and wanted to think about it. I only drove 3 miles off the lot when the Temp. gauge went all the way up. I had to stop and go the rest of the way (5 miles in 1 hour).

I called the dealer and complaint and he told me to bring the car back. The dealer told me now that the switch is OK but the container has a crack and I should replace it. I replaced it (160.00) drove 3 miles out and same thing, temperature is all the way in the red. I brought it back and told him that they should take responsibility for the overheating. Dealer denies it and tells me it's a coincidence... and wants $500.00 to diagnose the problem.

I don't personally believe in coincinedences.

Anyone has any suggestions?

PS-Not that it is important but I had the timing belt and water pump

replaced a month ago at another dealer.
