My TKD indstructor told me that he went to Korea for his second degree black belt and one part of his grading consisted of being told to walk into a bar and start a fight (and win - obviously). I believe he was telling the truth.

Just thought that was interesting.

Please excuse my ignorance , is TKD supposed to be defensive or offensive?

Both i believe. The Korean Police tactical squad are trained in using it offensively.

It can be used as both. I prefer to use the terminlogy of acting or reacting - but then I'm a pedantic so and so! I have always found it works best when reacting to an attack, but then that might just be my style.

From my experience, Judo is always best when acting defensively/reacting. It is far easy to move into a technique when an opponents body weight is coming forward or you are on the ground and they try to 'wrap you up'.

OK, thanks :). I was asking because I found it strange to be asked to pick a fight in a club as part of a grading when most martial arts are supposed to self defense :).

I think this was a grading Korean style. I'm not sure this kind of thing happens anymore, even in Korea.
