Squealing / Grinding Noise Coming From Wheel

Recommended Posts

Slowing down, at around 50mph, I get some wobble through the steering wheel and a bit of a squeak at low speed. When the car went in for its MOT last week, I asked them to check the nearside brake disc, as I suspected it was warped. They said there was some run out, but it was minimal and nothing to worry about. Today, coming from the same wheel, I'm hearing a grinding/squealing noise, almost like metal on metal.

There's no difference in braking ability, and the sound seems to be getting less severe, probably because the pad has been worn (done about 80 miles today). I can't get the car into the garage until Tuesday.

So, does this sound like a development of a warped disc, or something worse? If it's just a warped disc, I'll buy replacements and get them fitted.

I don't do a lot of hard braking, so I'm surprised that the disc warped in the first place.

Cheers

Simon

Well, I've had many trips to the garage and lots of heartache over the same sort of problems...on both rears. Though, once the issues are sorted it's all plain sailing again.

These are the possibles...

1 - The handbrake works by drum-brakes which are inside the centres of the discs. These are held together with springs and cups, if they come apart then you'll get scraping and clunking noises.

2 - There is a backplate behind the disc, which can get bent towards the disc. This can scrape, causing noise, especially when turning.

3 - There is a backplate behind the disc - only visible with the disc off. This can also get bent and then rub.

I've had all of these at one time or another. Not dangerous, just :tsktsk: annoying and fiddly to find.
