Cd Problems

Recommended Posts

Don't know if any of you can help with this but any help would be appreciated.

My wife has a Citroen Xsara and this has a 6 stack Philips CD changer in the boot. Recently this has started acting up and won't play most CD's, though some it plays each and every time, others sometimes and some not at all. It seems to make no difference as to which slot they are placed in.

I've tried one of the lense cleaning cd's but no change.

Questions

1. Any idea what the problem might be? Dirty lense, etc

2. Can I just replace the changer, if so any suggestions on how I find out what will be compatible with the steering wheel controls

3. Is it possible to repair them assuming answer 1 is something simple

4. What recommendaitons for a replacement - bear in mind this is the wife's citroen not my lexus ;)

Thanks

Take it into any decent car audio store and they should be able to diagnose it no probs, the lense could be scratch or mis-aligned or the laser could be knackered, the housing unit could also be knackered. If you take it to a store they will also be able to check out the model of the cd changer and tell you if you do need a replacement which ones are compatible with the steering wheel controls.

I know an excellent company in Oxford if your in the area?

HI

A lens cleaner never really works well as at best it just brushes dust to one side and the lens has a lip which is good at collecting it.

if your able to see the lens with the cd mag taken out then get a cotton bud dipped in isopropanol (or tape head cleaning fluid) and give it a gentle wipe.

if that does not fix it maybe the "laser" is on its way out, these can be replaced if you can get the unit out and find out who makes it and check with www.cpc.co.uk for a replacement "laser" they are around £20 - £60 but less expensive than a new changer.
