Is it the end of the ball stud itself (the threaded bit) that's making contact ? If so, then since there's a fair bit of it sticking out, you could simply cut off most of the excess (e.g. using a Dremel if you have one, or a hacksaw if you don't).

Good point actually, can't remember whether there was much sticking out of the end but might be worth cutting whatever there is off the end to see if it makes a difference.........
