Are All Towbars Equal?.........

Recommended Posts

........or are some more equal than others?!!

I need to put a towbar on my beloved rx300 and am wondering if some are less ugly than others?

I did go down the detatchable route at first but have decided that a large towbar may prevent other idiot drivers from getting too close & scraping my rear bumper again ( 3 scrapes in a year - the first just two weeks after getting the car  ).

Also, I want to put a cycle carrier on the towbar and just want the easy and slightly cheaper option.

The towbar firm have mentioned Witter or PCT (whatever that is?)- is one better than the other? However, am also concerned about the bumper cut I am told is needed.

Any advice or opinions would be appreciated before my car goes under the knife!

I'd go for a Witter, their quality is well known & there are (I believe) 2 choices. A fixed towball & a removable version. The latter would suit you better as far as looks go because once the towball is removed (a very simple affiar, one lever, about 1 minute) there is a blank to fill the hole on the receiver & all that shows is the blank & the electrics socket - which you'll need for you cycle rack nowadays because the law demands that you have a secondary set of lights & number plate visible beyond the cycles (they hide the car lights) -a simple trailer board will suffice.

If you opt for the removable kit check out the cycle racks before you make the leap to make sure they are compatible - some don't fit removable/swan neck towballs, beware.

That said their are a number of options available, some up to 4 cycles, but watch the weight limit on the towball, I think the Lexus fit towbars have a limit of about 85kg, I saw one fixed kit with only a 75kg limit - once again check it out before you buy.

Witter & Towsure have great websites that can guide you - just Google them & you'll find all the answers easily.
