Rs200 Is Being Strangled In Vvti Switchover

afternoon all, picked up my altezza on friday, it appears to have a little problem when the vvti switches over.

i can feel both switchovers (exhaust and intake), but one is either running very slow, or there's too far between the two, or something. the engine feels strangled pretty much all the way between 4 and 5 grand, aspecially in low gears - it's really reluctant to reach high revs in 2nd, but as soon as it gets above 5 it flies straight round to 8.

to the best of my knowledge the engine is entirely standard bar an aftermarket exhaust, and it's retained the cat so backpressure can't be blamed. has anyone suffered these symptoms before? i'm going to give the car a good service anyway having just picked it up, but i've got no preconceptions as to what this could be.

One lass on the ACNZA Forums has issues with VVTi after her mechanic put the wrong grade oil in it. It think he put good old 20w50 in :blink: Put some 5w30 or 10w40 in & that should help.

I listed the part numbers in my previous post, that should be all your dingbro boy will need. You should be able to get the Denso plugs through your local Toyota/Lexus dealer as well. NGK & Denso are the only brands you should run in these engines.

You could always try eBay if all else fails

  • 3 weeks later...

anywhere for a good price on these? dingbro? would these be the same sparks from the mr2 engine? ( just incase the dingbro boy doesnt know what an altezza is )

The MR2 engine uses distributor cap w/rotor to fire the spark plugs;

the Altezza engine uses coil packs to fire the spark plugs.

So, no, they are not the same.

i ordered some new plugs yesterday, FAO of people looking at this topic - use the link provided, because typing the part numbers into eBay search doesn't get much, and if you type in altezza you get reccomendations for 1g-fe parts, not 3s-ge.
