Mk4 A/c Compressor Pulley - Easy To Change?

Recommended Posts

I thought I'd read somewhere on here that it's relatively easy to change the a/c compressor pulley, but I can't find the topic now...

I've just bought a Mk4 (smoooooooth ride :)), but the a/c pulley bearings are whining - I'd like to replace said pulley (without changing the whole compressor, if possible) before the bearings fail & leave me stranded - so 1) is this possible, and 2a) has anyone got a suitable pulley for sale OR 2b can I use one out of a Mk2 or Mk3 car?

Cheers!

Ade.

I did just like you suggested, but the compressor was the faulty one (no pressure).

Accordingly the mechanic who changed the pulleys it was not that easy to do, dunno what kind of job it is since I did not do it myself,

I think at least for me the best option would have been to change the compressor, because now I paid for a job that did not solve the issue.

THe pulley is not just a pulley in the sense it is belt driven wheel, it is also part of rhe magnetic clutch assembly used to engage drive to the compressor. Removing the pulley is a bit tight as there is little room around the area with the compressor in situ and also when you remove the pulley other parts come off with it including shims which must be refitted exactly.

Looking at the explded diagram ( sorry cannot post) even removing the pulley will leave the bearing in the compressor housing with no way to extract it.

A replacement compressor would probably be the way forward, at least you don't have a misfire!
