Ls430 Sub-Key

Hi,

I recently replaced my R reg LS400 with a 2001 (Y) reg 430 which came with only the Master key (2 button variant) for the Type B ignition lock. Having read with interest the threads regarding re-programming a new key, would I be right in thinking that this only applies to Type A ignition locks?

The alternative, would seem to be, is refer it to a local Luxus Dealers plug-and play mechanic so they can charge £1400 to excercise their expertise!!!!

Grateful for some constructive chatter,

Nev

Hello and welcome to the LOC.

Must admit I wasn't aware of A and B type ignition locks but the normal requirement is to have the master key which you do.

From this other keys should be able to be cloned.

Have you considered ringing a few local auto locksmiths to see if they can obtain and program a spare key, their advice is normally free and I would think the cost is well below what Lexus want to charge.

Hi Steve,

Yep and thanks for the welcome. There are apparently two types of ignition lock introduced by Lexus between R and Y regs'. The type A is your standard key with function buttons for master and slave (as was my '97 Reg) and fixed key shaft.

The type B is rather odd in that the 'key' is a rectangular fob with a wedge shaped projection at one end. The metal key is secreted away in the body of the fob for use when the Battery is flat (thoughtful!) The ignition lock, is a raised plastic cylinder with a central slot for the 'wedge'.

Having just consulted the owners manual and determined that mine is described as a 'Smart Key', I have also discovered that the key I have isn't the Master after all :megaangry: !

I feel a 'hermit' moment is about to commence - remember the John Cleese sketch!!!

Cheers,

Hope my info is useful,

Nev
