Timing Belt Pulley

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Driving along and heard a noise, got out and had a look and imagine my surprise to see a broken timing pulley eating its way through the bottom of the timing belt cover! All this while the engine is still running fine. I think there is a good chance that the front of the pulley has broken off but the belt is still timed correctly, as I assume had it parted company fully a large number of crunches noices wouldn've been heard and a dead engine?

Currently Lexus are asking for over £500 for the pulley and don't get me started on the timing belt cover! So Im finding out if anybody out there has a pulley or dead engine which I can purchase one from.

Please pm me as I'm eager to get the car back on the road

Thanks

Phill

petayV8;

I've just discovered my timing belt is shredded and like Cooperman, I'm very lucky that the thing didn't burst and ruin the engine. Thing is, I'm looking on eBay to purchase a new timing belt kit and there are lots of different pictures. Some have 2 pulleys, some three and some 4! What's the crack with that? They all say they are compatible for my IS200. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Derek. I got a SKF timing belt kit with Pully and Idler. I didnt see any kits with more than 2 pullys?

I have no idea how to fit these or if any additional parts could be fitted. My friend is doing the work next saturday so will report back. Ill ask him if there was the potential for any other parts to be replaced, but im sure someone on here will advice. As far as i know you only need to replace idler and pully and is the same on most cars, and on the IS200 is the reason they get eaten up because they were not replaced with last belt change. I was lucky as from looking at the service history mine was done at a lexus dealer so they knew to replace idler and pully...

I am also replacing the water pump and all 3 aux belts (not related to timing belt)

Just had new belt put on today on my 03 plate IS which has done just 64k. Original belt didn't look too bad for a 10-year-old. My mechanic wanted a Gates belt so got one of those in kit with an idler and tensioner from eBay for £125.

I got the timing belt kit and had it fitted guys. It turns out that it's just a generic picture on the front. It has two - the tensioner and the pulley. Going like a dream now.

Cheers folks.
