Speed Wheel Sensors

Hi all,

I have an imported 2003 SC430 Soarer and I am having a problem with the cruise control and speedometer dropping off (not working) whilst driving.

Information from my local garage after a diagnostic test is that I have a problem with one of my wheel speed sensors.

Although the "Bosch" diagnostic meter he used cannot go deep enough to identify which wheel sensor is faulty.

Lexus garage advises cost of new sensor to fix £400???? My local garage says b........ridiculous.

Any help please?

Or am I over the proverbial barrel with Lexus garage!

Cheers H

Wheel speed or ABS sensors are easy to check with a digital multimeter, unplug the sensor and measure the resistance,if you don't get any reading the sensor is faulty.

Unless things have changed the speedometer normally gets its input from the transmission speed sensor not wheel sensors.

Personally I would find another independent garage with Toyota trained staff and diagnostic equipment.

I fthe fault is intermiitent I would be looking for damaged wiring or poorly connected sockets.

Next time it happens just try giving the dash a good thump above the cluster to see if it all works again, then start looking for bad connections around it.

I would have thought it was a transmission sensor and the wheel sensors are ABS related.. My 430SC has an issue with a speed sensor the one that informs the sat nav..and computer. But my speedo is fine. The average speed reading is always low so when looking at the sat nav it shows a very long time to destination then catches up quickly at the end. There must be a transmission speed sensor as each wheel may record different speed information.

This seems to be to indicate separate sensors for the computer averages and sat nav and another for the speedo. If not my computer must be wrong and I would have thought that's unlikely.?
