  1. Unfortunately one of my pistons had seized solid and would not come out - so I decided to replace the caliper - which cost me £58 as opposed to £28 for a repair kit and a new piston. I am picking it up today and will do it over the weekend. I will have to check the others too just in case, but having had the car for 6 years, I've not had the problem before (its a '94 GS300) so have been fortunate it seems.
  2. I recently replaced a front wheel bearing - and all appeared well. Suddenly the other day I experienced violent vibration if I traveled over 60mph, and also noticed it at 40mph up a steep hill. Thought it might be the wheel bearing coming loose - but on jacking up the car I found the front wheel was bound tight - and subsequently found that it was a binding piston on the caliper. Earlier in this post 'osteo66' was hoping to post some simple instructions for repairing the caliper, and a link for the supplier, but obviously never got round to finding time to do it. Can anyone recommend a suitable supplier of repair kits, and possibly any links to anywhere I might find some useful instructions before I start the task of repairing the caliper. Also, do you think it is worth doing both front calipers at the same time as eMJay suggested that the seizing is a common problem.
  3. For anyone who may be interested, I solved the problem. I removed the wheel and brake calipers (only two bolts), then removed the hub from the suspension unit (2 more bolts). Time taken 45 minutes. I bought a new bearing (Mills Autos - £45) and took the hub with the old bearing still in it and the new bearing to a local engineers who had the necessary press. They removed the old bearing and replaced it with the new one (1/2hr at £40/hr =£20). I then replaced the hub, calipers and wheel. Time taken 35 minutes. - job done - cost £65 total and time 2hrs 20 minutes total (including travelling time). Sweet!!!
  4. I have a '94 GS300 and it has run sweetly for the last 4 years - but the other day I noticed a rumbling from the front nearside which I am sure is a wheel bearing. I spoke to a local workshop who quoted me £100 for the kit and £120 for the labour. I know I can get the kits for about £50, but wondered how much of a job it would be to replace it, and if this is even possible without specials tools of some kind. Has anyone had experience of replacing a front wheel bearing? Are there any pitfalls I could encounter if I tried to do it myself? Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated.
  5. I spoke to DMD today about a refurb on my GS300 wheels. I was impressed with what they told me. I rang the number and got no reply - so left my name and number - 'David' rang me back within 15 minutes. He quoted me £40 per wheel (including doing the Lexus branded centre caps) - same day turnaround and a 3 Year warranty with the work. He even offered to drop me into Bristol city centre and pick me up again when the wheels were done (they are on the outskirts of North Bristol about 15 minute drive from the centre and 5 minutes of the motorway.) He also said he can arrange for a courier collection delivery service for most places if anyone can't get to Bristol. I will be arranging for my wheels to be done in the next couple of weeks and will report back when the job is completed - including before and after pics if I can post them.
  6. I had the same problem last week - the radio suddenly stopped working. It was the fuse. At the same time however the clock, door mirror adjuster and heater stopped working. If it is the fuse yours will have done the same as the same fuse is used for them all. If not then it won't be the fuse. The fuse is the 10 amp one on the top row closest to you in the drivers well. When I removed mine the first time it looked OK and I was baffled. However I later looked at it again more closely and found that it was blown, but the crack was so small I could not see it until I looked at it in daylight. Hope this helps.
  7. Thanks again Rodders, tried it again, left battery off for 20 mins this time - no luck.
  8. Thanks for the suggestion Rodders, I tried that after seeing your message, but unfortunately it didn't cure the problem. Looks like a trip out tomorrow. At least I'll have the pleasure of driving the car for the 100 mile round trip.
  9. I have checked both the fuse boxes, the one in the drivers well and the one under the bonnet. You mentioned 2 under the bonnet - was that a typing error, or is there another one not mentioned in the manual.
  10. I have had my GS300 for 2 weeks and I'm most impressed. However yesterday when I started the car the Radio, Heater, clock and door mirror control were dead. I checked the fuses and nothing seems to have blown. My nearest dealers are over 50 miles away, and both have said I need to take the car in for a check. Before going to the trouble I wondered if any of you guys/gals had any thoughts on what the problem (hopefully a simple one) might be.
  11. Am I the luckiest GS 300 owner - or am I missing something? I've only had my first Lexus for a week or so and already I am hooked. In the time I have owned it I have only covered 496 miles - but was amazed at the economy. My trip consisted of 336 miles of Motorway/A roads at an average of 80-90mph, and the rest urban driving in town/dual carriageway. Imagine my amazement when I filled with petrol today to find it had averaged 29.6 miles to the gallon. My driving is not exactly sedate, although I don't hit the floor with the pedal, but rather 'stroke' it giving the car time to pull at its own pace (most of the time anyway). I don't brake hard, giving myself plenty of time, letting the car engine do the breaking gradually. I have previously owned a Mercedes 260E, a Vauxhall Royale, an Opel Senator, a Vauxhall Carlton (2.5) and various other lesser cars. The Lexus wins hands down over them all for comfort, luxury and (it appears at present) fuel economy. Let's hope it stays that way. I'm now considering buying my wife a 200 - if I can find one at the right price.
