  1. From what other members have previously posted these units seem to have been failing around the 100k miles area. Although this is a known fault on pre facelift cars, which has been reported by some LOC members, I would imagine that most cars were not affected, although a larger unit was fitted on cars manufactured after Oct/Nov 2000. Personally I think it worth having a good extended warranty, which coupled with breakdown/recovery service memberships tend to take most of the worry out of driving. Don't let these posts worry you too much though. thank you both, i am not worried just needed to know about any early worning signs to look for before lights and buzzer sound on dash. many thanks don

  6. Hi and welcome, all i can say is how i feel about my gs300 which i have had 2 yrs, I myself have always had ford granadas and loved them and i had the chance of this gs 300 and i love it to bits, its a 1998 early mk 2 and i think Lexus are holding there prices and it depends on what you are expecting for 3 K, the older the car the more things need replacing, like mine i have replaced battery/ alternator serviced/pully tentioner replaced/ crack pully replaced/ and wheels refurbed and having new tyres fitted tomorrow, but it as all been worth it as i have said i love it to bits and for a car which is 11 years old it still turn heads. if you have not been in one to drive please take a chance and do it this is the advice i can give you, there are many on here who can give you more advice than me with older and newer cars. hope this as not put you off Don

  16. Getting a good towbar is not a problem as there are excellent suppliers out there. If your GS300 is an autobox then check whether an auxilliary oil cooler would be beneficial. A GS300 should be a good towcar if it has been looked after but, like all towcars, it will only tow well if you have loaded your car correctly and also your caravan. Thanks yes it as been looked after i am 3rd owner and 2nd owner was a very good friend, the 1st owner not sure but he only had it for 3 years it as only it done 140,000 it is a mk 2 1988 with full service history yes it is auto but sure about the oil cooler you mentioned,(how would I know if it had) Don sorry 1998 Don

  18. That shouldn't matter - there should be loads of places that can fit generic towbars in your local yellow pages. It's not a difficult job and shouldn't be too expensive either. thanks thats helped me to the rocking horse s--t, just a matter of ringing around thank you. Don
  19. Hi all, I would like some advice please on towing, I have decided to get rid of my second motor , which is a astra van and trailer and all my camping gear and invest in a caravan. So the question is before I have tow bar fitted is- a, what are Lexus like for towing as I have never seen one with a towbar? b, I guess looking on ebay for a towbar will be like rocking horse s--t Many thanks Don
  20. New tyres are probably best option. If you buy wheels with used tyres you can never really be 100% sure that the tyres have no hidden damage. Thanks thats what i will do i was just looking at options and after all, i did have my wheels referb last year so i will look around prices on new rubbers but what to have on at mo i have goodrich, and they was not a bad tyre . the last time ahad new tyres was on my granny and they was 100 each so i guess the prices wil still be around that. many thanks to all don
  21. My GS430SE has the 18" sport wheels fitted which, as far as I know, were an option when the car was new. Does that mean that the geometry on my car is non standard? I think he meant speedometer not geometry, but no changes are necessary just make sure you choose the right profile tyre. If you change the rim size ie 17" to 18", you need to make sure the tyre has the correct profile to compensate. This makes sure the tacho reads correct and also acceleration doesn't suffer, all be it very slightly. There are charts on 'wheel' web sites that show what tyre profile you need for a particular wheel. For eg if your 17" wheel with tyre is 24" diameter ( 24" is big just an example to use ) then a replacement 18" with tyre should also equal 24". It's all about the profiles. Any rim supplier will give you the information. Personally, keep the 17". As far as I am aware no changes are needed to the speedometer, odometer or tachometer because, as you state, if the rim size is changed then the profile should also be altered to keep the total diameter the same. Since the diameter remains the same I could see no reason for the geometry to require to be changed, so wondered if Mike246 had a particular reason for thinking that. Well thanks for the info, the reason i asked the question was i need new rubbers on my 1998 which 16" was standard and there is a scrapped 1999 on e bay which 17" was standerd that year, and i was going to have those wheels and tyres but i think i will just keep my 16" standerds and fit new rubbers many thanks don
  22. Sorry i should have typed in 16" which is standard, not 17" as you say well thats what i have on and what it states in owners manual 225x55 x16R x94v Don
  23. Hi everyone, I need to know if I can change rim size from standard 15" to 17 or 18" on my mk 2 1998 Lexus gs 300s without any problems, the new wheels will be coming off a mk 2 anyway so there should not be a problem but would like addvice as mine is a early mk 2. Many thanks Don
