  1. My wife works for the Ministry of Transport - she doesn't work for VOSA... not sure what you're talking about tbh. The ministry of transport deals with aviation, railways, ferries, etc. VOSA doesn't. Are the police and ministry of justice the same thing? ministry of transport used to be incharge of mot testing as well thats why its called Ministry Of Transport test. MOst ald time testers still use the name ministry when refering to vosa and i know everyone still calls it an mot test. I dont know anyone that thinks ooohh my vosa is due at the end of the month.
  2. I'm getting very confused here fil. In the above quote from your post you say the copper was waiting with his speed camera! On your latest post to this thread you say the copper was following you but you were unaware it was a copper. If he was following you how could he be "waiting with his speed camera"? Two sperate insedents blending into one mate sorry. I been stopped for so much random stuff over the years it all blurs together. lol I used to get stopped in my 1969 escort because it was the type of vehicle that usually didnt have documents in order !! now hows that for a reason to get stopped. Took ages to finally get a copper to admit that one. Copper was at road sid camera when he pulled me for undertaking. I got stopped on motor way, i was blatenly tail gating this guy who was very slow in the outside lane and wouldnt move. He even jestured for me to pass him on the left. I used to record everytime i got stopped it used to happen so much. I used ot get just about every reason. I even been stopped for "looking Dodgey". i was driving round with my baby in the car it used to make her fall asleep. I passed the same copper 2 or 3 times going in random directions. This is why he stopped me. course i was driving round in random directions i wasnt going any where LOL
  3. Yes ormi i went in work today and checked. It used to be any light above the bumper was testable. I know scored corroded brake discs are nto int he test no more i have explained that once i failed a vehicle for corroded brake discs when it came back for restest they were not in the test any more so i didnt really need to retest as the failed item wasnt a fail any more. I believe airbag/srs lights are being brought into the mot soon so thats the next change. i read that too i think that should be brought in as its a saftey issue bet you see just as many cars coming in for mot as i do with the a/b light on Yes it should be in the mot but, needing the airbag to work would mean that the car would have to crash and we are nto allowed to predict the future during an mot test. WE are not allowed to say how the car will be in the future so who needs the airbags working. Thats the current stand point. Funny thing is though vosa can predict the future they certain everyone going to crash and roll over other wise why would you need a fuel cap with a seal on it. If you not going to roll your car then why seal the fuel tank filler. Working at a dealer ormi you wont have half the crap i get. Sills failed on corrosion that have been repaired with filler, then primed and painted. What can i do ? i cant start scrapping the paint away to see if theres any metal there can i. The guide says listen for the noise when tapping to see if it sounds diffrent(or words to that effect) firstly the owner wont be happy me tapping his freshly painted sill. Secondly i cant fail it for sounding funny!!. Mot testing is a bag of nightmares if it wasnt lucrative i dont think many garages would want to do it. Had any nasty emails from vosa yet??. I had one the other week asking why i had doen an mot at 12.37 when we close at 12.30 on a saturday. I failed a car at 9 oclock on a horn not working, i had not time to fix it so just failed it. As i pulled the front door shutter down the guy came beep beep beeping down the road. I rolled up the door and fast tracked it for him. How stupid was i to think it wouldnt matter if i worked 7 minutes over time!!. Well of topic but but hey. oh and as most of my post get removed anyway doesnt matter lol
  4. I would say you were just lucky. Undertaking IS a crime but, as with speeding, if it is a copper then he is human and can show discretion and just give you a verbal warning. If I was in that situation I would certainly be very dubious about inside laning because if, as you say, he was on his phone then he is quite probably not even aware that you were behind him and is obviously paying scant attention to things around him. He knew i was there i had flashed him enoguh to let him know i was there. The copper wasnt stationary he was behind me,i was paying so much attention to the idiot infront i didnt see it was a copper behind me i just saw the headlights. I got some clown jamming the brakes on at me the other day. He was middle laning @ 50mph i drove up behind him moved intot he middle lane then out into the third lane. As i went across behind him i flashed my lights and gestured for him to get into the left lane. The idiot jammed his foot on the brakes. I must admit i did pull in a little early when i passed him and again jestured that he should be in the left lane. He simply flashed his lights at me and gave me a hand jesture back. This is a bug bare or mine when people bad driving affect my driving. I should have to change lanes all over the place to pass some clown who cant drive.

  6. mt point is though What offence. ON the night i was stoped the idiot in the outside lane was chatting on his phone the copper saw this because i asked if he saw it and he replied yes he had thought the driver was on his phone. Yet the copper still stopped me. Maybe it was because i got of at the same junction as the copper either way i would have thought the other guy was commiting the worse of the crimes. I didnt get a ticket and when i told the copper what i had done and i knew it was probably wrong he didnt really say very much of anything to me to be honest. In the same situation again i still wouldnt have a clue what to do. if its a crime to undertake then why didnt i get a ticket ?? if its not a crime then i can do it again. Then again i could have just got lucky and maybe will get a ticket next time. I pretty sure if you was on a road and the guy infront was on his phone yu would want to get past him!!
  7. Yes dave the fog lights could be in the headlights i think there was a post earlier in the thread about a fog light position being as high as anything up to 4 feet from the ground. It's very possible that they could be there. I pretty certain that there used to be something in the mot test about any light above the centre line of the bumper being testable for beam pattern and angle in the mot test. Definitely and additional lights on the car above the bumper that came on with headlights were subject to beam and angle test. Its not something i have come across recently so it could have been removed now. There's loads of changes in the mot test almost monthly. Slightly off topic but i once failed a vehicle for corroded brake discs, the guy changed them but by the time he brought it back it wasn't in the test any more. I didn't retest his vehicle as i could no longer fail it even if he hadn't changed them.
  8. So its a question of numbers then? if theres a big long line of slow moving vehicles in the outside lane all traveling slowly i can pass them but if its just one who cant be bothered to move over i cant pass him. To save all the confusion shouldnt it be ilegal to drive in any other lane than the left one. If your in the ouside lane for no reason should this be wrong. I constantly end up behind clowns riding the middle lane. If the clown in the middle lane on a motor way is doing 70 and the fool infront of me refuses to speed up to over take but pulls out to overtake, what option do i have but to pass on the left!!. If some idiot sits in the middle lane on a motorway and i drive in the left I have to change lane then change lane again over take then change lane and change lane. Doing this doesnt half look like your serving all over the road, when infact your doing exaclty what your ment to do.
  9. So from what your saying its the definition of "slower" moving traffic. Its ok to pass on the left if a car is doign 10-15 mph but not if the cars doing 40 in a 50. Hes still traveling slower than me as the highway code say ok to pass ont he left if the right is slower then was i doing anything wrong. If i wasnt doing anything wrong why was i stopped. It shouldnt come down to how slower the outside lane is surely. I dont have a problem using bus lanes when others dont because they think they are bus lanes. if a car was in the outside lane travelling at 25 mph if i rolled up along side him then he changed into the left lane and hit me whos fault would it be. If it right that its not illegal then he would be at fault surley. I wouldnt have been breaking the highway code either as it ok to pass ont he left if the right lane is moving slower. I only ask as this happens alot to me as i do use bus lanes when they are not bus lanes. Just want some clarification as to if it right or wrong not having a go at anyone just want proof not an opinion.
  10. No dave i am not being provacative. Your post clearly says you passed everyone for 2 miles or more because no one was using the inside lane. So you was using the inside lane because no one else was. As your post also says it was an "out of hours bus lane" then it mearly is the inside lane. You quite rightly drove in it but in doing so over took everyone on the left. I quote the highway code as i know you yourself use it. So unless everyone for "a 2 mile or more" strech of road was either turning right or driving slower than you, you were infact breaking the rules of the highway code which i know you have used to quote rules before. It would seem very unlikley that every one on a dual carraigeway was traveling at less than the speed limit or you was traveling faster than the speed limit.
  11. I was in Hull a couple of times last year, not sure which road but it was a very long dual carriageway which I was driving into Hull from north. I thought it was really good as no-one was using the bus lane even though it was "out of hours" during a busy morning. I got a few strange looks and just passed everyone for maybe 2 miles or more because no-one was using it. Was the bus lane in the outside lane Dave?. If its on the left, then that would be illegal to pass on the left. No, the bus lane was on the inside. No it isn't illegal to pass on the left. This is where a lot of problems and holdups/delays occur......some folk just DON'T know the law. If you are on a dual carriageway and the inside lane is moving at a faster pace than the outside lane then it is perfectly permissible to pass on the inside lane provided that you are not jumping from lane to lane. If you don't believe this then you should check the law! Also next time you are on the inside lane in a traffic jam on a dual carriageway, are you going to just "keep pace" with cars in the outer lane if that lane is moving at a slower pace than the inside lane? If its not illegal to pass on the left why did i get stopped for that very thing only 3 weeks ago??. i was on a dual carriageway posted 50 mph, there was a car in the ouside lane doing about 40 i couldnt work out what he was doing. It was only when i moved into the left lane and passed him, that i saw the copper waiting with his speed camera. I wasnt speeding but he stopped me anyway an told me of for passing on the left,If its not illegal to do then there would have been no cause to stop me at all surely. I didnt get a ticket but the copper said he was within his rights ot do so. So if its not illegal what was he giving me a ticket for?? ADDITIONAL EDIT My link It would appearthe government web site would state only over take on the lfet if the vehicle infront is indicating to turn right. A dual carraiage way has a central reservation making it pretty hard to turn right on. I wonder why every one was giving you strange looks??

  13. Now this could be contraversial but wil give it a go anyway thinking out of the box on this one. Ok with fuel cost running at probably all time high how to save fuel is the question everyone is asking and if their not asking that, they want to know where they can buy a smaller car from. OK,most efficiant speed for driving is 53ish mph think we would all agree with that i did say 53 ish. So why not make the speed limit on all roads 50mph,thus saving fuel on every journey and saving the planet in the mean time. Before any one starts with the "oooo that would be dangerous" my other plan would be to make it illegal for people to cross the roads in places other than designated cross points. Abit like jay walking in the states have crossings at the end of every block. These crossings would be controlled by pedestrians, which in my area anyway, there doesnt seem to be many except in town centres. If it was made illegal to cross anywhere but designated cross roads, drivers would be better able to drive at higher speeds. I tried tonight and my car for certain stops well within the guide lines set out in the highway code so the stopping distances on new cars would be far far greater than than the ones we all drive to now. The problem with my new laws, would be the time between bringing in the law and everyone actually sticking to it and not crossing the road in random places. Then again would the stop start driving of a crossing every hundred yards or so cause more polution in the long run?? This could be just a well random thought that crossed my mind whilst in the sauna tonight so i wont be suggesting it to my local MP not unless everyone is going to back me anyway and thats not going to happen. Oh and i am certainly not a "greeny" trying to save the planet. I do believe in global warming, but dont go with the thought its all down to humans burning fossil fuels. The planet has been warmign up and cooling down with sea level rising since the big bang. Are humans speeding it up? possibly can we stop it happening? not a chance.
  14. A fog light can be any where from on the ground to almost 4 feet up. Thats why Range Rovers and such like get away with fog lights high. Since this thread started i have noticed more and more cars that have daytime running lights in the spot low down on the bumper where a fog light would normally be. These lights as daytime running lights are ment to dim when its dark, but because they are on all the time as the new law states they have to have day time running lights their aloud to have them on. The ones i have seen seem to be no dimmer when its dark and they just look like they are driving round with their fog lights on. The new mercedes i have seen dont have fog lights anymore they just have the daytime running lights.
  15. I dont mind bus lanes so much its just when busses are not in them that it really annoys me. The other one is when it a periodical lane and even otu of hours people wont drive in through fear of a ticket.
  16. On what basis do you work out your statistics? I am not doubting them just asking the question. Surley mileage comes into the equation more than just weather and temp.!! Wear rate for a tyre comes down to compound of rubber, driving style and area the owner lives. Oh yes area the owner lives. Under the new mot computerisation scheme everything is recorded. What cars fail on what items in what area is a big suprise. Aparently Milton keynes is a big area for tyre wear. More cars fail on tyres than anywhere else in the country. Aparently theres alot of roundabouts in the area. Dont forget figures produced by manufaturers are usual based on rolling road conditions and not real life. As for a brand new set of tyres going on your car in september with 10mm tread on them can you prove that they are beter because they are winter tyres and not just because they had more tread on than the ones you took off. Brand new tyres usually have7/8mm with a new set of winters your getting 3mm more tread. I bet the tyres you took of were not new and at best had 6mm of tread, therefore your new rubber would have had 4mm more tread. I would put money on it your car felt better at getting rid of water. Was it all down to being winter tyres though or did the extra 4mm of tread have something to do with it you think. I still wont be buying winter tyres. I personally dont feel the need to. I dont doubt they are a beter tyre and never have just a whole lot of money to fix a problem i didnt have in the first place.
  17. Agree. Not sure what point he's trying to make here, but bar wasting his time and server space, I can't see the sense of his questionable goobeldigook. Maybe didn't get this is not the place to try impressing women with his cars or driving prowess. There's no sexy women, here, mate ! wrong again these are not my cars for a start. If you cant see the point i am trying to make you could just stop reading my post now theres an idea. You seem to be following me around this site making comment on every post.
  18. mmmmm dont recall knocking them, i mearly pointed out i dont see the point in them. Its been above the magic 7 degrees in my area for nearly the full year. People keep pointing out the tyres work best below this 7 degress, does this then mean they work the same as a normal tyre above this temperature and theefore everyone should take them off again now. For the amount of time these tyres would actually benifit is one of the main reasons i dont use them. I have driven a car with a full set of brand new winter tyres on ok it, wasnt my car and its was only a 5 miles road test but to be honest i didnt notice a diffrence. Think it was about end of november so would have been cold and possibly wet. I have mentioned many times that i have provided a set of full winter tyres for ONE customer this winter.
  19. I can't see the relevance of the above statement to your condemnation of the AA and their employees! Do you condemn ALL of the breakdown/recovery operators or just the AA. I am sure that anyone who has been employed on breakdown work will have misdiagnosed at one time or another at midnight on a cold wet icy night with often ill maintained cars. Can you honestly say that you have never misdiagnosed a fault in your nice dry "workshop" after your midmorning cuppa? The above statement is again showing that the AA isnt as squeeky clean as their public image would suggest. At the outset the were set up to "help" members in anyway they could even it it wasnt entirly honest. Then again i think its only recently become illegal to to notify other road users of police presance. Hasnt soem one recently been in the press for the very same thing?? I didnt condem any one did i? To condem them would be to "grass" them up and condem them to a fate wouldnt it??. I mearly pointed out a couple of examples of what some of the AA patrol men get up to. Yes i have misdiagnosed a fault on car, but then again the timing belt job that the AA man said was a coil i could tell it was a broken timing belt without opening the bonnet. If you have ever had a car with a broken timing belt its a sound when cranking you dont forget. Its the same patrol men with wrong diags over and over and,as mentioned, one of the patrol men used to work alongside me so i know his standards before he even brings a car to me. I was mearly pointing otu a couple of problems with the AA so that people realise they are not as squeaky clean and prim and proper as the public image appears.
  20. i teach potholing and caving, amongst other things is there a fund for victims lol. I know what you mean just more fund raising isnt it.
  21. Once the car is in the system its in the system. The only problem would be the wieght of the car. The tester would have to enter a curbside weight. I presume like us he guessed based on his experiance and simular models. With the car pictured about we had to get a weigh bridge ticket and enter that weight so the computer could calculate the breaking figures. Thats abotu the only upside of a garage next to a skip yard, they have a weigh bridge.
  22. A BBC TV documentary suggested that "chav" culture is an evolution of previous working-class youth subcultures associated with particular commercial clothing styles, such as mods, skinheads and casuals. The widespread use of the "chav" stereotype has come in for some criticism. Some argue that it amounts to simple snobbery and elitism. Critics of the term have argued that its users are "neo-snobs", and that its increasing popularity raises questions about how British society deals with social mobility and class. In a February 2005 article in The Times, Julie Burchill argued that use of the word is a form of "social racism", and that such "sneering" reveals more about the shortcomings of the "chav-haters" than those of their supposed victims. The writer John Harris argued along similar lines in a 2007 article in The Guardian. Theres always 2 sides to every story!!. Theres lots of derivatives and origins of the word "chav" I think inthis case it could just be that "neo-snobs" have now got the problem that the average lad can now afford the car that he thought made him elitist. Because of this he now wishes to distance himself from such bad taste before his neighbours realise his Lexus isnt that posh afterall!!
  23. It may well be a mark c i was just quoting what it said on the log book. It didnt say mark c, but then i currently have a toyota corrolla that doesnt say corrolla on the log book.
  24. Ferrari 360 rag top. Porsche 911 turbo. Bently, Mint 85 limited edition Esprit tubro (now in France as the owner couldnt bear to part with it when he moved over there). Tatty cars?? I presume you mean the back ground cars. Good job i didnt pan the camera around theres a skip yard just behind the ferrari!!. As for recomending winter tyres to my customers most of them refuse to buy a branded tyre let alone "special" ones for winter. As you can probably tell from the picture, Louts esprit turbo and Vauxhall tigra in the same picture, i have a wide range of customers and wide range of cars i work on. The less well off end of my customer data base just would go for a "special tyre". As i have said i personally dont feel the need to buy and i would get them a dam sight cheaper than anyone else on here. If i dont see the need to use them why would i recomend them to others. I have never doubted there use.
  25. pictures of cars in my garage as follow. you dont get given cars like this if you dont know what your talking about. And the lad in the hat is my aprentice not me ye right i dotnknow what i am talking about. i have been maintianing these cars for 3/4 years. If you dont know what your talking about with this stuf you soon get found out. So as faras i an concernd you can say what you like about me i know what i am talking about and thats a fact. So Your amg mercedes over a bmw arguement i wouldnt waste my time argueing over such toy cars
