  13. personally, i think you should go for the rebuild. just my opinion though. i have begun stockpiling parts as i plan to do a rebuild after i get my suspension and brakes very nice and silky smooth; if you rebuild you can bore the cylinders and put sleeves in to defray the damage done, if any, by your scraping pistons. also, when rebuilding, you can installed forged pistons and connecting rods, and get a new balanced crankshaft. and if you are going to supercharge, you can lower your compression ratio. take your head to a specialist, and have them check it, it is most likely fine, but may need new valves/springs... if not, maybe you can go for a port and polish, or some longer duration camshafts... if, on the other hand your head is thrashed, this may not be a terrible thing. you may be able to source a head from another toyota engine and do the hybrid thing, since the IS200 1G-FE is not really a performance engine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_G_engine the only benefit of finding a used engine is that it will be much less expensive than all of the above. good luck in your search.
  14. the getrag transmission alone will cost you around $3000.00, give or take a grand or two depending on currency conversion, condition of gearbox, and greediness of seller. even over here in Japan those things are more valuable than big breasted 17.5 yr old virgin twins whose wealthy parents just died...
  15. neither the OEM ECU nor the OEM harness are the same. http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_E_2001_LEXU...EFVKW_8404.html http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_E_2001_LEXU...EAVFW_8404.html
  16. I have the opportunity to snatch up a tom's 280T T.E.C.S. ECU. I am just trying to get an idea if that sort of thing would be worth bringing with me when I come to England... as in, would anyone be interested in it if i did, or would it be a poor investment?
  17. The 1G-FE has the down pipe on the Right hand side. The Altezza with the 3S-GE units have the down pipe on the Left hand side. In a LHD vehicle (OP is in Sweden therefore LHD) the steering is also on the left therefore interferers with the exhaust manifold and down pipe, this is pretty simple to understand????? I know this because I have the only true 3S-GTE in the world (all the others are 3S-GE's with GTE internals as they started out as Altezzas) i don't mean to be difficult here, but neither the 1G-FE nor the 3S-GE have downpipes. i am not even going to explain that one. plenty of people turbo charge the IS300 in the United States, and it is LHD. they do not have this mysterious steering component problem that has been brought up here. plenty of people turbo charge the IS300/Altezza AS300 in England, Australia, and Japan, and there they are RHD. they do not have this mysterious steering component problem that has been brought up here. i do not want to argue, but i hate to see this guy get improper information. bottom line: if he wants to do the engine swap to a BEAMS 3S-GE, it will work. especially since he has 90% of everything he needs. and if he wants to turbo charge it, i am certain he will be able to accomplish that as well. it might take some finagling, but it will not be the first LHD Front egine RWD four cylinder with exhaust manifold on the left hand side of the motor in the world, that somebody turbo charged. and do some research on the Altezza BEAMS 3S-GE, it is a better engine than the MR2/Celica 3S-GTE. that is why so many people turbo charge them instead of doing true 3S-GTE conversions. the third gen mr2 3S-GTE puts out like 260 bhp, but it is with forced induction. the Altezza BEAMS 3S-GE, w/dual VVTi puts out like 200 bhp, stock, that is high compression, not turbo charged. i should not have to explain that. http://www.beams-redtop.com/blackmods.htm
  18. i am not 100% what all is connected to your head, but if you are going to change the timing belt (cam belt), that is the optimal time to change your head gasket. since you have to remove your timing belt to change your head gasket and all... but you will need new head bolts, unless your head uses studs, then you will need new nuts. you should check out ARP head studs as a replacement for your head bolts, then you will only need nuts when you remove your head. plus the headache of removing everything that is connected to your head. when your head is removed you can do all kinds of cool things. you can shave your head, it is another way of changing compression, or fixing warped heads if you remove your head bolts in the wrong order. great time to install a higher compression head gasket (or lower compression head gasket if you want to supercharge) and also some new cam shafts and cam gears while you are at it. fun times man, fun times...
  19. IS300 is sold both RHD and LHD, i do not think they changed the orientation of the exhaust? if it is that big of a deal, i think the only thing needed may be a new bumper, unless he does not mind cutting his own hole in his bumper. even then i do not think that will be a big deal. and i have no idea what a 1J is, maybe a 1JZ, which was never sold in an altezza or IS series lexus... the IS200 came with a 1G-FE... nothing wrong with custom exhaust anyway man... your exhaust manifold and down-pipe will be fine, you might, and i doubt it, but you might have to go get your own pipes from the header/down-pipe to the muffler custom made. people put the 3S-GTE in old Corolla's (or twin cams, or hachi roku's, or what ever you want to call the AE86) here and in the United States, and I have never heard of this steering column problem that has been brought up. i am not saying it will not present a challenge, but i do not believe you should scrap the project because of it. hell, if you pay my way to sweden, i will help with the process. i promise you that the 3S-GE (or 3S-GTE if you decide to turbo it) will satisfy you much more than the 1G-FE, not matter what you do to it. if you have not already purchased the motor, gearbox, wire harness and computer (i read your whole post) i would advise you just save your money, sell your car, and use the total to buy something with a better engine already in it. unless you can get the set up for an extremely good price, which means not much more than free, i say pass on the motor and stuff. but that is just me, i try to do my own work on my own car, so i am hesitant to let other people work on my car. even Yeldarb had a specialized shop who removes and re-installs that very motor on a daily basis, albeit from a different chassis, and overhauls them in between, i mean these people really know this motor inside and out, and they had a time doing this conversion... when you remove the stock engine, and reinstall a different one, even if the engine was designed to go in that very chassis, you never know what kind of problems you will run into during an engine swap... i have personally done one by myself, and helped on a couple others, it is very educational, and it consumes all kinds of time. engine swapping is one of the most fun things i have ever done, so if you are going to do it yourself, by all means, dive in, educate yourself. you can not put a price on that sort of thing. and i believe you have chosen a completely doable project... but it is not going to be done over the weekend, so unless you are going to be able to spend all day every day for about two weeks or so, it may take you some time to get it done, a month goes by slowly, months make time stand still, i hope that is not your only form of transportation. other wise you are going to be paying someone a lot of money for labour. did not mean to lecture you man, hope this helps -jeremiah
  20. the engine will fit. if you have a 3S-GE Beams from an Altezza (or IS200?) then it will go in yours. you may have to buy engine mount bushings along with a new air flow meter. there are several kits available to force induction. Trust/Greddy makes the most common turbo charging kit. but if you are going to turbo charge your motor (or supercharge it for that matter), you will need to lower the compression. this can be done several ways. either buy a different head gasket, or change out the internals (crankshaft and pistons) there are two stroker kits that i know of, JUN and TODA, that will lower the compression in the process. be careful though, there is also a TODA stroker kit that keeps the high compression. if you do not lower your compression ratio, you will not be able to run high boost. the mkII MR2 came from the Toyota factory with a stock 3S-GTE running approx 12-15 psi at 8.5:1? compression ratio (off the top of my head). hope this helps.
  21. check your oil using the "dip" stick. if it is a fairly clear/light color your oil should be good. oil is changed every 3000-15,000 miles/kilometers, depending on who you ask. in reality, you are not so much changing the oil as you are changing the oil filter, which you can not do without changing the oil. a clogged oil filter is bad, mmm kay, very bad boys and girls... it is a good idea to change the oil filter as often as you feel necessary depending on your driving. but it is only required about every 3,000-7500 kilometers or about every 5,000-10,000 miles. premium filters and oils still need to be changed at regular intervals. constant EXTREME temperature change however is bad for oil, and therefore, if you are running your car, let us say, at high RPMs during the winter, it may be a good idea to change your oil/filter before and after winter time? here in Japan, it is law that you must have all season/winter tires on your car from late fall until mid spring. most people have their tires rotated at least once in between these dates. if you are doing it yourself, it is just common practice to change your oil/filter when rotating your tires or changing from winter wheels to summer wheels. use 4 quarts of (synthetic?) 10w-30 motor oil, that should be fine for where you are at. these are common synthetics that i know of: mobil 1 synthetic, castrol syntec, royal purple of course there is the synthetic vs. crude debate; synthetic is probably better for the environment? i know plenty of people who can argue both sides, and i will not do that here. there is probably a thread about it somewhere on this forum.
  22. sir, congrats on your purchase. when i get to england (yes i see you are in ireland) i will be interested to see your car among others i have noticed here on the forum. as far as i know, the Altezza was never sold from Toyota with a factory Turbo option. It looks to me like you have the Trust/Greddy turbo kit. if these are true statements, then the person who put the kit on probably changed the head gasket to lower the compression on the motor. or the individual may have even bought the TODA or JUN stroker kit which changes the displacement from 2.0 to 2.2 Litres, and also lowers the compression ratio. the stock compression on the BEAMS 3S-GE is 11.5:1 so if you were forcing induction with a turbo charger or supercharger the boost pressure would have to be really low or you would blow something somewhere. the Toyota mkII MR2 came with a 3S-GTE running 12-15 psi with 8.5:1 compression ratio stock. (that is off the top of my head, check to make sure) that being said, your timing belt (cam belt) was most likely changed when the head was removed/reinstalled, or engine removed to put stroker kit in. your best bet would be to go to tezza world, i am sure one of those guys would be willing to look at your car and let you know what is up. i would find out your compression ratio and engine displacement and go from there. hope this helps a little, jeremiah p.s. post some pictures of the engine for us would ya? is there a drooling smiley?
  23. Does anyone have the TEIN EDFC, or some other electronically controlled damper system? If so, please comment, and tell me what you think. I have the opportunity to purchase a used set of TEIN type Flex with the EDFC controller. I am hesitant to purchase used coil overs, but some friends of mine have told me that it is not too difficult to rebuild/refurbish them. I would really like to put some coil overs on the car, but I was kind of waiting until after I had done some other things. This is not a high priority for me, but the deal seems almost too good to pass up. I know that micromarc has the TEIN EDFC setup. Maybe he will tell us a little bit about it?
