  4. Hi all, This has been posted numerous times, even very recently here. I have the dreaded front knocking o/s suspension. I've replaced both upper and lower ball joints, shock absorber (3 times), top mount all to no avail. I'm now suspicous of the large bush on the lower steering control arm (I think that's what it's called).   5. If you find it please let us know. I've been looking for years and not got to the bottom of it. I've changed shock absorbers (3 sets by different manufacturers), top mount, both top and bottom ball joints and overall had 4 garages look at it to no avail. I'n mow suspicous of the lower steering control arm bush. In summary, it can be any number of things and it's a case of slowly working though eliminating them.

  7. It won't be anything to do with painting your calipers. The higher build up of dust suggests a sticking caliper - check to see if the disc is getting hot and or the caliper is binding on the disc -rotate the disc by had to check for binding. If it is sticking then change the caliper, and it may be that all your problems go away. Measuring run out on both front wheels is a 1/2 hour job max, so shouldn't cost too much at the stealers. They should all have the guage. I've got one, £18 from Amazon and very easy to do. http://www.amazon.co.uk/MAGNETIC-BASE-METRIC-GAUGE-INDICATOR/dp/B003W4SFSK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1432541779&sr=8-1&keywords=dial+guage Just attach the magnetic base to the bottom of the shock absorber leg, place the tip of the guage 10mm from the outer edge of the brake disc and then rotate the disc to see the level of run out. If I remember, they should be no more then .035 of a mm (yes, mm) out of true to be good (but google that to confirm). Mine started to wobble (ironically) when I fitted new Lexus OEM discs - the rust on the hub where the disc mates with it was putting it over the tolerance. A good clean up later and it was fine.
  8. I checked my runout with one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003W4SFSK?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00 £18 and spot on for useability. And it takes 5 minutes per disc. Mine were outside of tolerance (0.05mm is the max if I remember), measured 1cm in from the outer edge of the disc. It's amazing what a difference an apparently small amout of corrosion on the hub surface can make. After cleaning mine up they were back within tolerance.
  9. The run out can also be caused by corrosion between the rotor and the hub- just a tiny raised spot can lead to magnified error at the edge of the disc, so make sure the surfaces are very, very clean. Anything more than .05 of a mm can cause issues.
  10. I checked the run out on my new Lexus OEM disks and it was 3 times the tolerance. Maximum run out is .035 mm (yes, that tiny). Mine was .12 I then took the discs off and found corrosion on the hub - tiny but by the time you measure the run out 1cm in from the outer edge of the disc it gets multiplied. So, I spent some time cleaning the hubs up, put the discs back on and lo! run out is now within tolerance. Braking at speed is now wobble free. Next up is a full alignment.   11. I'm now looking to get the bushes all checked for mine as that's probably the cause. I can't find anyone to replace just the bush though. Bush £18, Lower control arm inc. bush £180. That's a massive difference especially when X2 for both sides. Grrrr.... Will make sure they are knackered before going down that route.
  12. Hi It wont be scored discs causing the wobble. See above for possible causes. I changed both my front discs recently for OEM Lexus ones, total cost for discs and pads was £230. That was for doing it myself. Quite an easy job but I would make sure you have a breaker bar to undo the caliper bolts, £13 on Amazon.

  17. Both front discs are new - Lexus OEM from the dealer. No sticking calipers either. The problem was, IIRC, there before the discs were changed but has got worse recently. I'm suspecting suspension links worn along with wheel alignment, as the front tyres are unevenly worn, the n/s being quite markedly uneven. Just got two new front tyres, gonna get Lexus to check the suspension and then I'm going to get a full 4 wheel alignment done. Here's hoping...
  18. Hi all, I've noticed recently at 50+ mph there is a perceptible steering wheel wobble under braking. At 114k on the clock, I'm thinking front suspension. Any thoughts as to what it might be? Thought: I have unevenly worn front tyres since Lexus did a 4 wheel alignment almost 2 years ago. I never used to get uneven wear before this - could that be a cause of the above? I have read that the Lexus alignement is not the best, they have the wrong settings (seem to remember reading that somewhere on this forum).

  20. Hi, Is this an IS200? If so then it's a known problem that (as far as I know) no one seems to have got to the bottom of. I have it on mine - always been there, despite 3 different sets of shocks, I've also renewed the top suspension mount. If you get the front wheels off the ground, relax the suspension, then put it back down and drive the car the knock goes away for a short while, then comes back. The popular reason was the valve in the shock absorber, but I now have Koni adjustables on, so unless they use the same valve inside then it's not that. I've learned to live with it, but it still grates sometimes. Sorry for the negative response. Anyone else help here?
  21. Hi all, I had them changed last year at a (non lexus) garage, and the 'feel' has never been quite right. Also, almost no brake dust from the front which suggests very hard pads i.e. not enough 'bite' Are the standard Lexus pads the way to go? Or are there better ones? I don't drive fast so don't wnt a pad that has to be warmed up to work properly - just normal daya to day 'stuck in London traffic' driving. Cheers Paul
