  1. Aahh, right! Not got the car here at the moment to have a look - I did wonder what the button was for! I'm sure I've read on here somewhere that later cars are different - that they didn't have the 'S' slot though. But I'm easily confused! Pete
  2. On my 56-plate 250, I think the paddles only work when the gearlever is over in the 'S' slot. If its in 'D' and I move it to 'S', it automatically drops to 4th gear, assuming it was in 6th or 5th when in 'D'. I've also got a little button marked 'change lock', or similar, that I assume will lock it in whatever gear its in when I press it....but I could have got that wrong as I've not read up on it! Are later models different in respect of the paddles/'S' slot I wonder? Pete
  3. I've searched, but can't find an answer to this one! After my wife's used the car, she switches off and her phone is then disconnected from the touchscreen setup. I get in and need to manually connect my phone....not a problem. But....on powering up, the screen shows 'phone was disconnected', which seems logical, but there's no obvious way to get rid of this to bring up the 'settings' button, bottom left, so I can connect my phone. Touching the 'phone was disconnected' button makes that disappear, and takes me to the speed-dial screen. Fiddling about via the 'back' button takes me nowhere I need to be! Am I missing something? Is there an easy way to get rid of 'phone was disconnected' and get a live 'settings' button? Pete
  4. I've just had a few days away on the bike with a good friend of mine - 800 miles-ish altogether, over to Wales, then eastward bound to Norfolk followed by some aimless wanderings in the middle. Very enjoyable, stayed in some nice pubs, met some nice people. Derbyshire is, without a doubt, the worst county for the imposition of pointless *****y speed limits - I don't think we rode on a single A-road on our way west that hadn't been dropped from an NSL to a 50 or even 40 limit. Other counties/countries didn't seem blighted by this nonsense, I intend to investigate what sort of people are employed at County Offices in the Highways Department! I bet the image I have of them in my mind is 100% accurate..... :tsktsk: Pete
  5. Careful with the Daily Mail digs.....wasted on some, red rag to others! :D My SAAB 9-5 Aero is quicker than a 996 Turbo through the gears, 30 - 100mph, and it only cost £5k, no mods at all. Now that deserves a headline! :winky: Pete
  6. I know what you mean about his hair......slightly....annoying! But he's very, very good on a bike, so I'll put up with it! - watching him go round the IoM is something to behold. He seems to have an enthusiasm for stuff too - something that's missing in a lot of presenters these days. I reckon he can fix stuff OK - they let him loose on lorries...is that good, or bad I wonder?! Pete
  7. Just wondered how many on here ride a bike. I've ridden for longer than I care to remember, and can't imagine not having a bike of some sort in the garage. Current steed has taken me all over the place, many trips through France into Spain over the past 10 years or so, all very enjoyable....some very (very!) wet ones too! This photo was taken last year en route to meet the rest of the family down near Girona. I came hurtling round a sweeping left-hander on a deserted road south of Caen and was confronted by.....another German tank! Pete
  8. He's very entertaining is Guy Martin - sort of the working bloke's James May. Of course, the common thread connecting them is that they both ride, and understand, motorbikes! :D Pete
  9. Regarding the wheels, my IS250 is on 85k miles, Lexus serviced up until 70k. The wheels all appear to be original - there's no lacquer 'peel' or corrosion anywhere at all. I wonder if its down to how clean owners keep the wheels from brand new? Some people leave brake dust on till the wheels are black, which can't do the finish any good at all. Perhaps I'm just lucky....although I'm not normally! Pete
  10. I've bought from Oponeo and http://www.mytyres.co.uk/ previously, both very good, although I've found mytyres' prices a bit keener over the last year or so. Mytyres manage to deliver within 48 hours every time. Highly recommended - especially if you've got a mate who fits and balances each tyre for a bottle of plonk! Pete
  11. Just for fun, expecting huge postage costs, I tried amayama.com for a pair of new tips - or 'covers, metal jacket' as they're more properly known! £55 including delivery in 5 days, which I thought was a very good deal - they'd be duty-free as they're less than £150, but even adding VAT gives a nice saving. Pete
  12. The power driver's seat on my '56 plate IS250 is making quite a loud noise when its moving backwards and forwards! I've done a search and came up with TSB No NV001-06, which points to the 'seat track locating pins' being at fault. Before I start dismantling stuff, I noticed that the noise is exactly the same as when the passenger seat is moved....but a thousand or so times louder!.....has anyone had the same noise and found its simply something needing lubing? Yours hopefully! Pete
  13. Many thanks for the quick replies chaps, appreciated! At least its not a glitch...or me being stupid! Our previous motor had a Parrot fitted, if we both got in the car together it auto-connected with the phone most recently added to its list of paired devices. I suppose the Lexus' logic works up to a point, but it would be nice if it just auto-connected to whichever single phone got in the car! I agree about the wife not driving it....I had 4 mint alloys up until yesterday...!! Pete
  14. I've posted this here as it might be specific to the 250/220d. My car has the MM setup, both me and my wife use it, we both have Microsoft Lumia phones. Each one pairs with the car's system without a problem (although the car doesn't seem to broadcast a Bluetooth device name like other Bluetooths I've had do - on the phone screen, there's just a space where a device name would normally be). Auto-connect is set up and works, but there's a bit of a problem! If I've been using the car for a few days, each and every time I get in, the phone auto-connects. When the wife gets in, her phone doesn't. So...she manually connects the phone....and it will then auto-connect every time. Then, when I get in next time...yep, you've guessed it...I have to manually connect mine and it will then auto-connect....and so on, and so forth! Have I done something wrong somewhere, am I missing something? The car doesn't 'forget' either of the phones, it just doesn't seem to want to auto-connect to more than one. I've looked in the MM handbook and I think I've done everything right. Could it just be because the car and its Bluetooth setup is older-generation, whereas our phones aren't? Pete
  15. Strange, that one. Unless it was from an insurer/broker that only quotes if you've got a licence other than a UK one? Pete
  16. Have you picked the wrong licence type in the menu when getting a quote? Easily done - I couldn't understand why my quotes a while ago were for large sums of money, till I realised I'd declared zero no-claims in the drop-down menu box! Pete
  17. Yes, I did read that! I was always good with a big 'ammer! Wait for my next post - 'Where can I get new exhaust tips from as I've ruined mine...?!'....... Pete
  18. Cancel that folks......before anybody suggests 'try doing a search'.....I did a search!! Tomorrow, I'll be wiggling them in the hope they're not seized in place! Pete
  19. Can anyone tell me if the IS250 exhaust tips are removable please, and if so, how do they come off? They need a really good fettling, which is really awkward in situ. Thanks, Pete
  20. May and the Hamster were given new contracts last week worth a quarter of a million each. Mike. Today's press says James May and Richard Hammond aren't involved in the new Top Gear. Evans says there's definitely going to be a female in the new lineup - I only hope its not the truly awful, wooden, ill-at-ease-on-TV Jodie Kidd....she might be able to drive, but her presenting skills are zilch! Evans is all about....Evans, really. His breakfast show is dire, self-congratulatory and banal - and he talks...and talks....and talks.....too much, to put it mildly. Top Gear had, in its last format, perhaps become a bit jaded and 'samey', but I did think the latest series had pulled it back a bit. It doesn't matter who the BBC put on stage, it won't be Top Gear any more...they should have had the courage to completely rebrand it, not hope that the previous glories magically attach to new presenters. They won't! Pete
  21. Its on 85k. Only MoT'd last Tuesday, and everythings working OK (apparently....). I'd read about the sticking calipers, so that was part of the plan - new discs/pads all round, strip and clean everything while I'm at it. Pete
  22. I did wonder - I suppose postage would be a killer though. Amazon say I get 28 days to return them, free of charge, for a full refund, so I might stick them on here - I think they fit GS models too. Pete
  23. Thanks for the quick reply, appreciated! I just did a Forum search on rear discs - looking at the rear size compared to the fronts, I've got solids! Shame really. They don't have the solids, so I think I'll look for Delphis to match the fronts. Pete
  24. I've had the car less than a week, but have decided to treat it to some new discs and pads - the current discs are quite 'lipped', and as the parts don't seem too pricey, it seemed the right thing to do. Anyway, I've bought some Blue Print-branded rear discs, Delphi fronts. I've only just realised that the IS250 seems to have had either solid or vented rears fitted. My new ones are vented, and I can't tell which ones are on the car as the backplate is so close to the disc. If I've bought the wrong ones, can they be fitted in place of the solids (if that's what I've got)? Or am I going to have to return them (foc as they're from Amazon)? Pete
  25. Hi, new IS250 SE-L owner here, just checking in! I picked up my 56-plate motor last night, and I'm a happy bunny. :) 85k miles recorded, Lexus history up to 59k, then serviced at a local garage - its due a service now, so I'm collecting parts and a (very!) competent friend is going to do it for me. Everything seems to work properly, the car seems to have been really well looked after (no parking dings/scrapes, the interior's almost like new, unmarked wheels) and it drives like a dream. Actually, it feels surprisingly 'tight' for an 85k-miles motor....no squeaks, rattles etc, I was very impressed when I first drove it, and the 45 mile drive home seemed to confirm that its a very well screwed together car. I spent a few hours last night going through the handbook....why is the navigation manual soooo big?!!....and picked up quite a bit of useful info. Looking forward to spending some time on here - before buying the car, I spent an age reading through the various sections researching the IS250. I almost went for a 220d, but wanted an auto....and there do seem to be a few 'd' issues that put me off too. Pete
