Chip Shortages. According to  one of the largest producers ASML it will take 2 to 3 years before the situation will be resolved.

A moan for people waiting on a new car like me but maybe good news for the ones that will keep driving theirs as the value definately will go up.

    Tell me about it.

Assuming this delivery date is actually kept, I would have been waiting for my new car for almost a year.

    Something drawing my attention.

    1. After the first 3 yr cycle they will take the cars back to the factory. Where are the dealers in this story? will it be an internet only operation without dealers?

    2. After the third cycle ( 9 - 10 yrs) they will recycle the car at the factory and re-use parts where possible. So after 10yrs they take the car out of the market? 10 years is nothing just go for a drive and you will see plenty of cars 15/20/25 yrs old.

    These are good points.

Since it is only for leasing, and available exclusively through this Kinto brand, it is possible that it will be Internet only.  From what I understand, a lot of leasing deals work this way already?  Not sure you would do if you want to actually try the car before agreeing to the lease though.

As for your second point, if the cars are forcibly recycled at the end then I agree that it would take quite a few viable used cars out of the market.

Basically, if this idea catches on with our manufacturers, then the business model would be shifting to a pay-as-you-go one where cars become a service item rather an something you own, which doesn't look like a good prospect if you don't want a monthly payment.

I think it makes sense from Toyotas point of view. There will be a market for this scheme. Please realise the cheapest cars are disappearing from the market due to CO2 regulations. The Toyota Aygo/Citroen C1/Peugeot whatever that literally sold in the hundreds of thousands are gone and will not be replaced. Transport for the masses so with what could we possibly replace it with? Those customers are prepared to pay 5/8k for a reliable car with minimum costs but will never buy a 10 yr old car without warranty as a possible breakdown will destroy their savings. Enter the Toyota scheme. A refurbished 9 yr old toyota with 3 yrs warranty for 5k !

That is a nice idea, but what if it is a £10k car with only a 1 year warranty?  The point I am trying to make is that if this becomes widespread then the dealers will get a lot more say on used car values and their associated mark-up.  After all, they will say that it was 'refurbed' only 3 years ago, so it should attract a premium for all the extra work the manufacturer has put into its maintenance.

Of course, the argument that arises is that they could be right and the car could be in very good condition for its age, but there will be some sort of premium attached which won't be optional, hence less choice of used cars at the lower end of the price range.

There's nothing in that article that suggests this is anything more than the "approved used" bull**** that goes on in nearly every used car salesyard in the country.

Toyota will hoover the carpets, upgrade the software, throw some new tyres on it and then sell it at a premium because it's "manufacturer refurbished". I can't imagine they're going to replace anything they don't need to. Ex-leases will normally be in reasonably good shape already as they're required to be serviced and nobody wants to get stung when they return it.

What this article really seems to be saying is "wow, this country elected Boris Johnson as their leader. they'll literally buy anything. party time!"

Linas has it right, this is more than just approved used.  What I am curious about is where it will include all the cosmetics as well such as damage to bodywork or trim.  By the sounds of it, they will be aiming for something that resembles 'lightly used'.

Also, from the Autocar article, it seems that the refurbed cars will only be available via certain scheme and will be rebranded, such as:

Kinto will be an umbrella brand for a range of services, which will be introduced in selected cities and markets. They include Kinto One, a full-service leasing system that will merge vehicle, service and insurance costs into a single monthly payment. Kinto Flex will offer subscription-based car leasing with a ‘premium experience’.

So, effective, what they are doing is removing a lot of used cars from the market that could have been bought outright and converting them to leased for another 3 year cycle.  This would then be followed by another cycle meaning that they wouldn't be removed from the leasing plan until they are quite old.

I have no idea what it is with my luck Shahpor, I was hoping all the dab would be left in 2021!

In situation like that even dash cam won't prove anything. I found so far the part number 81730-76010 GSP4Phase 4 Mirror Indicator Lamp RHF for £82!!! from lexusdirect!

I will check your link too, thank you very much! The used one will be considered as well! 🙂

No worries, I hope you get it sorted easily, although at £82 from LPD, it is a better deal than the one I found on Aliexpress!

I do worry about things like this as it has happened to me before more than once.  In the good old days a replacement would be easy, but today with electric/auto folding/heated/blind spot symbol/indicator mirrors, it can end being a complicated endeavour.

Either way, fingers crossed your luck improves Vlad 🙂

  6. It is a good point regarding the DMF and mounts, if it doesn't turn out to be something simpler.

In my case, my IS220d was juddering badly as the car was moving off, but didn't do it after that, so it isn't an exact match.  Although, after changing the DMF on mine it turned out to be the engine mounts in the end.

I’d wholeheartedly agree SH20. I found Carwow to be a great way to start. They lead me to the best starting price….at Ipswich.

When I collected the car Carwow sent me an Amazon voucher simply for using them. Think this is the future.

I also used Carwow to purchase my new car, so I agree that it is very helpful.  In my case, my local dealer just said they would matched whatever the cheapest quote was if I showed it to them, despite themselves quoting and not being the cheapest.  Got a good deal in the end, so it certainly takes the hassle out of shopping around.

  8. Welcome Stan 🙂

First, that is a hell of a commute you have there!

What you describe is certainly unusual as I am not sure I have come across one like that before.  Normally it is at lower RPM (<2000) when problems occur, so, other than the usual suspects - EGR valve & DPF - it might be something like fuel injectors.

Unfortunately, to diagnose most of these problems, you would need something like TechStream.  Available for not much cost on eBay, but I am not sure if you are that way inclined.

In the first instance, I would consider a clean of the EGR valve since it doesn't cost much and can be easily done.  If that doesn't help then you can move on to more difficult causes.

Let us know how you get on.

  9. You did the right thing not going for that F Sport.  A full main dealer history is preferable but no service for the last 2 years is certainly a problem.

Main dealer is a good way to go, but don't assume just because they are selling it that it will be up to standard when it comes time to buy.  Myself and others have had to return cars to dealers for additional work after purchase, so treat it like you would any other car buying experience.  Having said that, one of the benefit of going this way is that the dealer in question fixed the issues without hassle in my case, so it should be the same if something does come up.

Any particular criteria or are you just looking for the best one you can find?

  10. Welcome Azhar 🙂

If you want reliability and comfort then you have certainly come to the right place!

Residual value is a difficult one to predict, but my understanding is that the rarity of the GS means it holds it value better.  You could try something like this but I have no idea how accurate it is:

    https://www.themoneycalculator.com/vehicle-finance/calculators/car-depreciation-by-make-and-model/LEXUS/

Having experienced both IS and GS (albeit in GS450h guise), I can say that the IS is perfectly comfortable, but the GS is a noticeable set up, so if that is important then I would choose the GS.

I believe the F Sport is more desirable, so would hold its value better.  I can't remember the exact difference between models (I'm sure someone on here will know), but you are correct that it is mostly cosmetic with a few additions.  Bigger brakes, wheels and AVS (Adaptive Variable Suspension) are included as well as the F Sport instrument cluster and Sport seats.

Personally, for a year older and 10k miles, I would favour the F Sport over the Luxury.

I hope this helps and good luck with your search 🙂

    Hi, Merry Christmas! 😉

I have lost them not in the house, I/we (my wife or I) have lost them in Edinburgh Airport on on the way to Airport, after we parked and locked the car on Long Stay parking. When we came back from holidays we couldn't find the keys in our possession and we defo did not see them while we were on holidays!

This never happened to me before, I usually very careful with the stuff like that but having 2 kids, 4 large rucksacks and a baggy (my wife hates to pay crazy money for check-in luggage) makes it easy to forget something plus my pockets were not deep enough to hold the keys.

I can't remember when I saw them last time, for all I know I could put them on the tray during security check with all other stuff, so I could have left it there, do not know! 😞

I already filled a Police form which provided my with a Lost Property Number, so a call to insurance to follow, at lease to find out what is the procedure.

Merry Christmas to you as well 🙂

Sounds like a nightmare when you got back!

I assume you have tried contacting their lost and found, just in case?

    https://www.edinburghairport.com/help/lost-property-and-left-luggage

Fingers crossed you get a response from the dealer soon.

    • Thanks 1
  12. That's very annoying Vlad.  When you say lost, I am assuming you mean somewhere in the house?  If not, you might want to ask Lexus to also remove the lost key from the car's ECU.

Not sure exactly on price, but I seem to recall Mk3 GS's as being ~£300.

I don't think claiming through insurance is considered a claim (like for a windscreen), but if you call them to get it started the person you speak to should be able to confirm for you.

    Good luck!

  13. I think it might be because he lacks humility and isn't particularly easy to relate to.

Other multiple champions such as Vettel, Schumacher and Senna were always humble and sincere off track and are regarded as down-to-earth.

Lewis seems to be making statements about everything, brings politics in F1 and walks around dressed like a rapper.  It's like he can't bear to not be seen and talked about.  He also sounds manufactured and that he has a script he has to follow every time he speaks after a race:

    • Thank the team - check
    • Thank the crowd - check
    • etc, etc...

Also, unlike the others, he appears very stand-offish and not very well liked by the other drivers.  Respect yes, but you don't see him having a laugh or just chatting to them.  Other drivers do segments with their teammates and hang around with them but Lewis is nowhere to be seen once the racing is done.

I feel there is an arrogance and practiced demeanour about him that isn't appealing and it certainly makes me think negatively about him off the track no matter how good a racing driver he is.

On countless occasions this year Lewis has had to steer away from contact with Max. And at Silverstone when Lewis finally decided not to yield, Max assumed he had anyway and just turned in on him.

It should be noted that Lewis was found to be at fault for this accident and was given a 10 second penalty.

If we’re dissecting every incident in last Sunday’s race then Max should have had a penalty for his weaving on the straight on that last lap because this illegally prevented Lewis from retaking that position. He was even warned to stop it by his team so they certainly knew it was against the rules.

Weaving has been committed plenty of times this season by various drivers and the consequences in the first instances has always been a verbal warning by the stewards, so it wasn't illegal.

As far as I am concerned, the FIA and Liberty desperately wanted someone other than Lewis and Mercedes to win this year’s championships. The changes forced to the floor area of all cars prior to this season was in my view deliberately done to impact the low rake philosophy cars for this reason. Then, all stewarding decisions this year have been taken with a view to ensuring that Max and not Lewis won the championship.

I still find it very hard now to understand and accept how the normal safety car regulations were not followed on Sunday. Again, my view is that it was deliberately done to give Max an opportunity to pass Lewis on the last lap.

This suggests a conspiracy on behalf of the FIA in Max's favour, which I would suggest is far fetched and unwarranted.

Of course Max is a brilliant driver but on Sunday he was soundly beaten by Lewis and only won because the race director decided to break the rules to give Max and Red Bull the miracle that Horner had said they needed with 10 laps or whatever it was to go. Except it wasn’t a miracle, it was a deliberate manipulation of the rules to favour Max over Lewis. This for me is very hard for me to accept, even now.

It should be stressed that, whilst unusual, no actual rules were broken by Michael Masi as the regulations do allow for his interpretation and this was confirmed when the stewards (including Derek Warwick) ruled to reject Mercedes' appeal.

Of course, the playstation brigade will love Max’s style of driving because this is what they do every day from the comfort of their own bedrooms.

Senna and Schumacher, two of the all time greats, had similar driving styles so it isn't without precedent.

I know I am going to be accused of being a Max fanboy, but I do feel that the views are somewhat unbalanced so an opposing view is required to demonstrate that not everyone sees it the same way.

He hasn't made the corner because he had to take avoiding action. Max didn't leave room. Lewis was driving the racing line and would have had no issues making the corner without interference from Max.

Lewis didn't really gain an advantage, he was leading into the corning and was leading after it - the fact that the gap was bigger was mainly down to Max taking the corner at the most inefficient way, because it was a lunge designed to push the other car off the circuit.

Err, I really don't mean to be rude Colin, but I believe my previous post already answered this?

The point was that, yes, he left the track to avoid hitting Max, but he then didn't make any attempt to return to the track as quickly as he could and just cut the corner instead.  We have seen plenty of examples of people needing to give places up for doing the same hence why the commentators mentioned it almost immediately.

Also, as was mentioned numerous times during the Sky F1 broadcast, how did he not gain an advantage when they were side by side going into the corner and Lewis was ahead by over 1 sec after it?

Surely if you had watched the race on Sky then you would have recalled that being said?  I didn't make the observation, I just happen to agree with it.
