RX300 Spare tyre Hoist problem

Recommended Posts

I was checking the tyres on my beloved '04 RX 300 and when I was letting down the cable holding up the spare tyre underneath the boot the nut I was rotating stopped turning and got stuck. The cable won't go up or down no matter which way I turn it. I managed to get the wheel out and tried pushing and pulling the cable while turning the nut in the boot simultaneously but no joy! Wondering if I shouldn't try to take off the winding mechanism underneath and see if I can fix it, but wary of this since I tried something similar with my wife's VW golf and the spring loaded part exploded once I got it out firing random bits around the yard - hours of fun ensued!!

Help? Anyone?

Sounds as though the cable itself has jammed the hoist, possibly due to corrosion.   As far as I am aware there is no complicated, (spring loaded) mechanism involved with the RX so it is unlikely to be anything too technical.   I would try a liberal spray of WD40 or similar from below & above and then try working the mechanism back & forth.   Hope this helps.
