I've got an element not working on the rear windscreen, basically half the way, edge to the vertical line in the middle, would this only be caused by a break in the element or could there be another cause?

Not particularly easy to reach, I suppose I'd somehow have to remove the parcel shelf to repair if it was indeed slightly broken.
