change oil frequently, no need to waste money on snake oil.  I would change oil on a high miler every 5k miles, use good quality fully synthetic oil. An oil change is easy on the wallet, a replacement engine not so easy

I would suggest that ALL modern oils are more than adequate IF the recommended oil AND filter changes are followed.

Even the own-label brands will invariably have a sound base oil and a perfectly adequate additive package.  The problem faced by blenders such as Amsoil is that technically their fully synthetic products may well be able to maintain their performance levels for the 20K - 25K miles they state - and they are not alone in that.  But getting the vehicle makers to agree is another matter.

I recall the problems faced by BP when they introduced LongLife oil and recommended 12K mile changes, I think it was.

One of the reasons why a Full Service History is so valuable is that it confirms that these scheduled changes have been followed.  Of course, this is an enthusiasts website so I would expect nothing less. 😊

I had a ford escort that ran its main bearings, causing terrible noise and overheating, car was essential daily driver.

I used a litre of slick 50 ,a ptfe oil treatment added to the engine oil as a ‘get me to the end of the month’ repair.

The noise never went away but overheating stopped and car ran for months until I had the time to fix it.

Fast forward to a newish mercedes twin turbo diesel, when I added a  German  fuel additive, that blocked the diesel particulate filter.

Now I use redex in fuel to clear injectors.

I use Ptfe/ teflon oil additives on older high mileage engines,

doesn't quieten them but helps fuel consumption and reduce wear.

i only use a fully synthetic oil in all my engines, if you have ever dipped your mineral oil on a car that has just overheated, it is so thin it is no longer doing its job.

Have you ever tried any other additives?

My 07 plate IS is getting on now and the overall fuel efficiency of it gets worse every year.

Ive had a friend recommend this power blast from Hydra - https://www.hydra-int.com/diesel-power-blast.html But i'm not sure if its worth the money?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Give Terraclean a look Alex. It certainly works on my Jaguar.

Not sure if it is possible fit a Kleenoil by-pass filter system, back 16 years ago fitted one to a 50 year old Bristol bus (and it improved consumption by about 10%) and also fitted one to a 2 litre Isuzu  (I recall) for National Trust and got extra 15% mpg  (both owners were amazed).  Cannot recall mileage but the bus was over 500,000miles.  Not sure how much it costs these days and not sure if Kleenoil use their own techs these days or have regional installers.

We did look at putting one in my Mk3 LS, but at the time the filter holders would not fit in the limited space.

I do know that in USA they fit these filters to high performance petrol and diesel units, but they generally work better with diesels at improving fuel consumption.

Kleenoil based in Leeds
