Screen black after battery change

I don't really care much about fixing or not - just seeing if I can find out what's happening with the unit and if some light can be shed. I have no idea when I get a chance to look at this but send it anyway. -

You should have sent me that dud unit, I highly suspect that Lexus are fully aware of what's happening their Navi units.. 8 thousand pounds to fix a dead screen on a new model. This could potentially open a whole can of worms. I've said it a few times but my Subaru has its battery disconnected about 1,200 times and all I get is a security error at worst which is taken care of by disconnected and reconnecting the battery terminal again. The unit will never ever implode. The Subaru has multiple ECU, BCUs and other modern complexity like any car. But yeah, this isn't good for lexus and there not a recall because obviously Lexus aren't saying anything is wrong at all. -

I would have taken Lexus to the SCC long ago if it was me involved - a flawed unit and having the audacity to charge 6 grand to get it replaced - or half that if you send the dud one back - seriously -

Like I said multiple times, Lexus won't admit liability and for sure are aware of this issue and the SCC is the correct way to go IMO. It's there for reasons just like this -

The number one rule of companies is not to admit liability unless absolutely necessary - ie air bag recalls and stuff - its the same with everyone, inc the issue I have with a computer manufacturer. Anyone paying 2k or such for a unit is bonkers - please dont and give it to someone to look at as above comment - repairing these is entirely possible if you have skills, time and patience but all that is lacking now and the easiest route is swap in a brand new unit - its like this for all main components - fancy headlights etc - Kazumi Imai would be shocked with this...'The professionals' AIRED November 8, 2019 3:00 PM on NHK RUNTIME 1h COUNTRY Japan Deep in the mountains of Mie Prefecture, a little electronics repair shop stands alone. Appliances that have been given up on and refused by other shops arrive here from throughout the country in hopes that the owner, Kazumi Imai, will breathe new life into them. Amazingly, Imai's repair success rate is over 95%! He's spent half a century dealing with countless electronics, granting the wishes of his clients to keep using them. We take a look at Imai's astonishing repair techniques and his dedication to his way of life. -

Can you post a email me a hi res photo of this unit, the circuit board? Or can you disassemble it.. -

Yes, and replace a few 10 dollar components! -

Companies don't want drama, hence a claim out of the mainstream media, 100 percent Lexus know about this issue but are just playing along with it and charging customers for a replacement unit. -

If there was a fix, and I should hope there is then why don't Lexus know as they are fobbing off customer's with a new unit -

The issue I have had with unnamed company is a perfect example, they would not admit liability - I have had to sign a NDA but what it essentially means is the company screwed up and don't want drama - common sense says changing a battery should not bork a Navi unit - my Subaru is MY08, battery disconnected at least 100 times no issues, all that happens is a security feature is activated that needs resetting but nothing wrong with the unit or it's sound system itself -

I am an experienced electronic engineer with access to a whole list of expensive kit at work that would allow me to analyse this - I am actually designing a switching converter for my company now for a product that they are making - these places you speak of just don't have the necessary people to investigate things like this - I said it last year and I won't repeat myself once more - it's highly likely this is due to poor design - Lexus won't admit liability and will just pass off excuse after excuse and get the customer to fork out for a replacement unit, can Lexus diagnose some damaged components that need investigation under a microscope? Absolutely not, a competent repair technician can however. I don't know why people are complaining about this and not taking this up with lexus, including taking them to the small claims court as that is what it's used for. All you need is sufficient evidence and an independent judicator will decide. -

It's the same as the laptop I had to take to court, did unmentioned company declare a worldwide recall despite widespread issues? Of course not, sometimes you need to play hard. Do you work with lexus? -

You need to stop screwing around with Lexus and send your unit to some electronic repair shop (not the other one obv) - 90% chance that fix will cost less than £30.plus the labour -

Is that what I said previously Lexus are hardly going to do board level repair of a circuit board are they- either way anyone paying £500 to replace a dud navi unit with known issues is crazy - I would take them to the small claims, actually I would have that done long ago. -

Only for the fact someone with electronic knowledge could do a repair at a fraction of the price, and if it's a design flaw which seems to be the case there should be zero expense on the customer part. I have on going issues with an unnamed computer manufacturer over a laptop, I wasn't happy with the way things were going and went to the small claims court and won, I got a new replacement machine - unfortunately that too had issues and fed up with my tit for tat dealings I just opened this up myself and look to have done the repair myself. All Lexus will do is replaced of the main board, which probably has the same underlying issue as previous. -

Like I said last year, if someone sent me a unit I could do a better job and 1800 pounds is joke money, if some components are damaged I could replace them for whatever the parts cost plus my time spent and it won't be around 2 grand. I suspect some dodge design - anything connected to a car battery needs robust protection at the input, voltage transients occur over microseconds and can do untold damage -

It could be capacitors but they are widely used everywhere, if they are faulty why is it just the head unit impacted as they will be used elsewhere and if the manufacturer is relying on a single source supplier for a capacitor it doesn't bode well for Lexus - my company has around 3 suppliers for each capacitor or as many as we can get and pick and mix as we choose, if something goes wrong we will find out -

Capacitors cost nothing and are unlikely to be the chief suspect here, unless whoever designed that circuit board outsourced it to some back street boys in Shenzhen. I'm also an electronic engineer, with over a decades of experience and a few degrees and a master's award. As I said over a year ago, changing a battery should not cause this damage so let's understand that first - the question is why are the unit's going dead. If you are silly enough to reverse the polarity of the battery terminals you will do more damage than fry the head unit so it's not that - this issue is solely with the head unit itself, I suspect transients or in layman terms a voltage spike is doing this damage - the control ICs in that unit most likely run off 3.3v - it only takes a millisecond to fry these delicate devices if they are overloaded. There's 12v going into this head unit and it's going to be filtered and protected with passive components, then it's going to be fed to a switching buck regulator to change the voltage to 5v or 3.3v - something along this path has gone haywire -

Obviously a flawed design, people need to be more assertive here and stand up for themselves
