I finally got tired of the steel plate that I had stuck to the centre console for my magnetic phone mount peeling off whenever it got warm.
I decided to get some 1mm thick 430 (magnetic) stainless steel sheet and make my own bracket.

It goes back about 4" in behind the CD flap/pop-out drawer ("Auxiliary box" in the owners manual) and is stuck in place against the side of the hole with 3M sticky pads.
I did cut it to shape so that it fits snug against the metal framework in there and refitting the console also helps to stop it moving.

Works well, can use phone in portrait or landscape mode and doesn't jiggle about.
The width of the bit that the mount attaches to is deliberately that wide as otherwise it fouls the pop-out drawer when it opens.
