Considering car dealers (main dealers) have a legal obligation, that I'm aware of at least, to make sure cars leave the forecourt with insurance,

Nope, it's now your car and you are responsible for making sure it and you are legal as you leave the forecourt and onto the road. Nothing technically to do with the dealer.

Interesting William, I pick up a new ES on Wednesday and they have already warned me they no longer provide 3 days free insurance cover. We purchased a new Mini for my wife in November and that included a full years cover!

When I bough my used UX250h from Lexus Cheltenham (Listers), they provided a full tank.

They also asked for proof of insurance and taxed the car for me (at my expense though LOL)
