Eccentric Wipers

HI

Can someone out there please answer my question:

How do Eccentric Windscreen Wipers Work? They are the ones which reach further into the corner of the screen, normally on the passenger side. Its only on the drivers side if the manufacturer is cost cutting for LHD to RHD (or vicer versa) conversions. You can find them on the following cars:

BMW 5-Series (RHD Models)

BMW 7-Series

Mercedes Benz C-Class

Mercedes Benz E-Class

Mercedes Benz S-Class

Mercedes Benz CLK-Class

Mercedes Benz CL-Class

Mercedes Benz SL-Class

Lexus RX300

Peugeot 206 (australian model)

I thought it was to do with the limited space where the wiper are mounted ? on some cars

I know what you mean. We have an oldish Mercedes E-Class and it has just the one wiper. Its seems unusual how it works but it seems to clear almost entirely the whole screen in like an M shape.

I did some asking around about this and the answers i got back were mostly to enable a larger clearing sweep. may be this is it ?

The wiper rotor cam arm swinger bit, rotates on an oscillating bed of technical bits and parts. ;) <_<

L3X JG has got it. it is to get a larger sweep, but how does it do it, is my question

The left side wiper on the RX300 (RHD model) has 2 pivot points, not just 1 like most wipers. So instead of tracing a circular arc when sweeping, it traces an elliptical shape, covering a larger swept area. This is probably because the height to width ratio of the RX300 windscreen is greater than normal passenger cars.
