Engine Transplants

Hi guys, I'm interested in engine transplants (money permitting!) for my IS200.

I know Matt is having TDI putt a tuned Supra engine in his car, and obviously this is a toyota engine so will fit etc....

I would like more power so what about transplanting the soarer turbo engine? Or a 430 engine?

What other engines would fit - how about the 3 litre (tuneable to 1000bhp!!!) lump from the Skyline? Or a rebuilt 2 litre Ford Cosworth engine? Or the 2 litre EVO VI motor?

I'm interested as Xtreme Autos have the following for sale:

2.2 litre badboy!

What are the implications of cross manufacturer transplants? Is it even possible (within a reasonable budget, say £15k)?

Just playing with some ideas here guys.

anything is possible really, the main dilema is space and compatability

you could get a custom adapterplate made up for the engine.-.gearbox mount.

the elecrical side of things will be a bit of a nause as Toyota use what is known as a multiplex system in the car that links various ecu modules together

sticking the 2.2 in would be an awsome conversion, i think the cosworth conversion would be easier....but the cossy 2.0 litre is an old engine now.

i know of several ppl who have done the cossy--bmw swap putting the cossy into E30 bmw's

i think if you was going the route of a alternative manufacturer's engine then you would be better using the specialist tuners to do that conversion.....

so for a nissan power unit swap say use adder motorsport and so on....................

why not put your cash into seriosly re building the 1g-fe

nitrated crank

conrods,pistons and caps

custom cams(doing away with VVT-I)

gas flowing

etc etc etc.........and then banging on a turbo........or 2

......i have a 1 year old 1g-fe engine and box you could buy to strip and strenthen an rebuild .......while keeping your car mobile before dropping it in..................and im selling both units at a very very reasnable price.

this would eliminate several major issues......and keep the family linearage..........

Yes that was an idea - or having a custom 5 speed box made up with a long 5th gear. More money!!!

Similar thing really would get really messy so one option could be to have a brand new engine management system put in (with progressive boost controllers and a variety of eco/performance settings of course!!!) but again loads of dosh. Oh for the days of carburettors and massive displacement!

So someone like TDI wouldn't be the best choice necessarily then?

Do you know if there are any Lexus in the UK that have had cross manufacturer engine conversations? I wonder if anyone actually has experience of these things. Don't fancy being too much of a guinea pig although it's probably inevitable!! I read that thing by the guy who had his car converted to autogas - didn't sound pleasant. I, like you want a road-going car at the end of the day!

This is another thought. I was considering have the engine blueprinted - perfectly balanced piston weights etc - you can allegedly double the output of a normally aspirated engine this way allegedly. However here you're talking 10's of thousands of pounds.....

I see - could be a project couldn't it..... but i'm not convinced how tuneable the 1g-fe engine is really, as opposed to mass produced turbo motors - i mean have you seen some of those jap-tuned skylines?!!!!

Last question - do you know much about the Jap spec turbo'd lexus engines? Bear in mind i have a manual box..

I was thinking of the Nissan 200sx (sylvia) turbo motor, the SR20DET. I think it uses the same 6speed box as my Altezza, is a rear wheel drive 4cyl that is reliable at 185kw and very popular for drifting in Japan. All you need is to find a recent 200sx that has had a big rear ender, or I assume you could get the motor and box from a Jap import wrecking yard.

Look up www.skylinesdownunder.com.au or similar for detailed pages on how they have been put into Datsun 1600's. (my other car....) Great horsepower quite cheaply!

Thanks greeneyes, that's not one i had thought about. What sort of BHP are they good for?

I suppose there is the 300SX twin turbo engine as well - I really want maximum power here - hence why i like the idea of the Skyline 3 litre.

I'm now toying with the idea of rebuilding the IS200 engine... into some sort of beast!

Power, 220kw without too much work, but 300kw if you

really want to rebuild everything!! A nice small, light engine though.

I bought the Altezza instead of a Lexus because the handling was a bit sharper

without the big six in the nose. They are both available in NZ as 2ndhand Jap imports for about

L16,000 if two years old. In 2001 I paid $NZ43,000 (divide by 3 for pounds) for my 1999 one.

We have wreckers bringing in engine/gearbox units from Japan, some really hot stuff

that rarely gets here in a car.

I would say that the easiest engine change would be the 2JZGTE Supra engine. This engine is one of the toughest out of the box that lives and breathes. The Nissan engines have inherant weaknesses that are relatively expensive to deal with.

If it were my car and I had £15k to spend on it, I would strengthen the standard engine and have an uprated compressor kit on it.

Another consideration is the resale value of the car. You may find that your is200 with a Nissan engine will be as popular as rattle snake in a lucky dip, when you try and sell it.

That's my 2p.

Hope it's helpful.

Hi mark,

I had hoped you would join this discussion.

I believe your company has expertise in Lexus and Mitsubishi. Do you think the 2.2 litre engine that Xtreme are selling here:

Xtreme

would go in the IS200? If yes, would you undertake it?

Also perhaps you could give me an idea of the cost of the following strengthening/lightening mods to the 1g-fe engine :

nitrated crank

conrods,pistons and caps

custom cams(doing away with VVT-I)

gas flowing.

the cost of the 'charger I know already.

If I went for the Supra engine, i think I'd to wait for Matt's guinea pig to be finished and see how it turns out.

PM me if you like.

Anthing is possible, but you have to realistic about your budget, and that ain't gonna happen for £15k

To get a genuine 450hp 4G63 in and working in an is200 is going to cost around £30k because of the technical implications. If you want a four cylinder I, would recommend that you start with an Altezza, have it stroked to 2.2 litres then add the turbo kit and any of the other upgrades until your money runs out.

Uprating the 6 cylinder internally, and installing the supercharger can cost around £15 depending on which options you have.

Mail me off list if you are serious please.

Mark :)

TRD328,

TDI can get them you only have to ask - I shall be having them done at the end of the year!! Mark told me there is roughly a 6 week wait on getting them in!

Cheers

Si

roughly how much does it cost to install pistons and rods? what should also be done during the installation? ie engine balancing? Currently im quoted AUD $3000 - $4000ish to install...

My pistons has been sitting in the garage for 2 months now ... where has all my money gone?? :o
