Modding 9005 Bulbs To Fit 9006 Holder

I've modded some Halfords superbright bulbs, which are a 9005 (main beam) fit, so they will fit on the 9006 holder. I know others have done this too, but I was wondering if anyone had any problems as a result? These bulbs are 60w compared to 51w for a standard bulb. Would the extra heat be a problem for my LED sidelights?

Don't think the heat would be a problem, my HIDs a lot hotter than the OEM and not had a problem with the LED sidelights.

Lee...HID's are brighter due to the gas in the bulb, usually around 35W and burn cooler than std bulbs. HID's are a lot less likely to burn up your LED's than standard bulbs.

Damn - just got home and as I was turning my lights of, noticed one of my sidelights was flashing. Looks like the heat got to those LEDs after all. Had to swap back to the standard glass bulbs :-(

Think I need to email the guy at ultraleds to see if there are any LED sidelights that aren't affected by the heat.

It's not the heat....he didn't check the product before he sent it to you.

As far as I'm aware, it's only failed since I put the higher wattage bulbs in. However, only one has failed and it's not melted, so it could be coincidence and as you say, it may not have been checked. However, he does warn about heat on his site, but not knowing more about it, don't want to accuse him of supplying faulty goods. Only some of the LEDs have failed on the unit that is flashing.

As you appear to be the LED guru on LOC, can you recommend or supply some 501 LEDs? I'm after something that's pretty bright as the standard bulbs are rubbish. I drive with my sidelights on as a matter of course, due to the enhanced visibility it affords you to other drivers.

Then I switched to Piaa Tera and no problems since been over a year.

Have you got any more details on these?

Thanks

Simon

There are three versions of the bulb available 4500K, 5500K(which i'm using), 6500K. 6500K is the latest one its brighter than the other two and is available in UK. Try www.priracing.com or ebay.

The third version is the easiest to fit, straight swap. The other two require cutting the wires to install a resistor(ballast).

If you want to compare the brightness with ultraleds 4X5mm LED bulb these pictures might help.

Tera 5500K
