Is200 Se - Head Unit Is So Dead.

Recommended Posts

I know there are a few threads regarding the mechanics of the standard IS200 head unit, but I can't find them when I need them.

Basically, after a few weeks of my CD player reporting "Errors" when picking up discs, or playing Disc 2, when I've asked for 3, but reading Disc 3 on the display (confusing, I know..), it's finally packed up. So that's even more Lexus reliability I'm missing out on. Heh. I'm really not having much luck with this thing!

Anyway, I've got 4 CDs in the unit at the moment and when I try eject, I hear the eject mechanism whirring away, but it fails to eject anything. Similarly, it won't let me change disc, nor will it play anything. No matter what I do, all it does is make a fairly quiet whirring noise. Radio still works but I rarely hear my kind of music on the radio!

Is there a tried and test way of getting a locked mechanism to work again? Will Lexus help me out if I take it to a garage? Or am I screwed?

You're not having much luck with this car are you!

Disconnect the Battery for 1/2 hour (resets the system) this may eject the CD's or try to bang the side of the dash/console with your hand/fist to eject the CD's- I've heard this acutally works!

You really need to replace the headunit. If your car is under 5 years old, you should be able to get a replacement headunit from Lexus, if not, don't bother with Lexus- all they will want is to help themselves to your £££. Either get your headunit repaired (costs about £220 from Autosound, I think there is someone on eBay who can repair these units), otherwise stick in a aftermarket unit. Wozza is the man to speak to when it comes to ICE.

Heh.

Thanks for the info/advice, guys.

I take pride in my audio setups, so this could just be a good excuse to get a bit crazy with the sounds.

Quick question, Wozza. £400 to spend a HU... where would you go? Personally, I've always found Alpine to suit me perfectly, but it's been so long since I've spent any real money on an install, I'm wondering if things have come along a bit since.

All depends on wether you want best CD sound, or a DVD/flip out or DVD Double Din unit.

IMO £400-£700+ DVD head units don't play CD's as well as a dedicated £400 CD player,

but then a £400 CD player won't play movies.. :duh: it all depends what your priorities are :tomato:

Have a go to a local shop with some cd's & dvd's before you set your heart on a unit & try any you like out.

Any particular functions you want ? etc Think about what your requirements are first, then take your time

to choose as you will have this unit for a long while (with any luck).

Once you have decided which type (CD or DVD etc) then start your internet shopping around.

Take a print out of the best price with you and get the local shop/shops to demo the unit for you,

then show them how much you can get it for. They will be happy to barter to a point, & even if it is

a tiny bit more than an internet dealer, they are much easier to go back to if a fault develops.
