Stuck Oil Filter

Recommended Posts

Perhaps some of the experts here can offer advice.......

I cannot shift the oil filter on a Lexus IS200 - never been defeated by an oil filter in the past!!! Only possible access is from below and is extremely restricted. The filter can be reached at arms length only and a strut needs to be removed to have room to use a filter removal tool. I did not put this filter on personally but it is certainly much more than 'hand tight'. A fabric strap-type tool simply dents the casing and a chain-type wrench tool has punctured the casing. Due to the very restricted access, tools can only reach the upper half of the cannister and it will not shift.

Any helpful suggestions would be welcome.

Regards to all, Reg

It's not what i'd like to do but if you've tried a strap wrench and chain wrench, and they've not worked, your next port of call is to spear the filter casing with a screwdriver and try and turn it that way.

Best of luck.

I agree with Talisker. Had to do this on a few of my own previous cars.

Many thanks to everyone who responded.....I eventually managed to get the filter off without completely ripping it to shreds! I now see that filter sockets are available which look to be ideal - I did not know they existed.
