thinking of installing a tv where the

optional nav sys goes, any one know whats below the hardback carpet on the dash .. any one had this done???

It's pretty bare. There is a duct for the front air vents, but not much else.

You can actually pry the top bit off quite easily, depending on how it's mounted. I had a 2 screw jobby, making it easy.

Just pop a screwdriver between the top part and the air controls and it shoud unseat.
