Lexus Gs300 Mk Iii Rear Window Demister

Recommended Posts

Hi There everyone,

I am new to the Lexus ownership experience. I have recently converted from a BMW. All good and very happy with my decision. I got the car a few weeks back during the "summer" and all appeared to be good.

However, as the days get cooler and wetter I needed to activate the rear window demister. I left the function on for over 20 minutes and there was no change in the fogging on the window.

I have searched the forum and the net as a whole to see if there are any specific fixes or issues with this but have turned up nothing of relevence.

So my questions are:

1. Is there a seperate fuse for the actual heating element as opposed to the dash display?

2. Is there a connector that may have become detached somewhere?

3. If there is no obvious fault what is the best course of action?

I have examined the circuit pattern on the rear window and it appears to be fully intact. I cannot see any obvious breakages. All other electrics wok perfectly and the Aircon is fully functional.

I leave the aircon on automatic by default. I tried all other permuatations to see if there was a power draw issue and still no obvious demisting.

Anyway sorry for the long query.

Cheers

Goodbob

P.S. I did post a hello in the new members section!!

hi

welcome to the forum. im having this problem in my older gs300. after months of troubleshooting i found where it is, but i'll tell you the troubleshooting guide, as i hope its not as bad as mine!

if your demister light comes on, the its not the fuse, but good to check it anyway as it may simply need reseating. there is fuse box in the engine bay, and another one where the accelerator pedal is, well at least on the mk1's. it could have been moved to the passenger side where your shins would be if you were seated. once you locate the fuses, reseat or take them out and examine them.

if this does not work you can check the lines for any breaks on the rear window. all it takes is a small break in the circuit. there is a way of checking for this with a bit of foil and multimeter, you can find this on the net.

if that pans out to be ok, then you may have what i have. you may have to remove the side panels by the rear headrest that slopes to the rear windows. depending where your terminals are, mine are on the left. anyway when i removed mine, there is a 2 prong terminal. this weathered away and became brittle. i think when i went over a speed bump it broke. you won't be able to solder it, and you can't superglue it as super glue is not conductive. basically you're screwed like i am!! you need someone with a good knowledge of electronics to help you fix it. my builder said he can do it, but i haven't seen him yet.

i hope you'rs is not as bad as mine!!

good luck

Hi.

This may seem a silly question but was the rear window misted on the inside of the car? I'm only asking as i've never had to use the rear demister unless the rear window was iced over.

Not a silly question at all! Yes it was misted inside. Was a cold evening. I have since had it checked in the Lexus service centre and the rear screen has to be replaced as the whole thing is fried. All ok though as I just bought the car and this should have been spotted before it was sold to me. They apologised and have ordered the part and will fit the new screen in due course.

Interestingly enough they are also pulling the dash to replace defective retaining clips as there is a rattle over by the glove box. So all in all I am happy with the outcome.

I have to say they have been a pleasure to deal with and a big change from the crap I had before with a different premium marque.

Anyway next week it should all be resolved.

Other than that it is all good. Love the car and the toys are great. My favourite feature is the reversing camera....now if I could only figure out a way to have it on when I am in drive!!

Cheers

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi folks,

Just a brief update; the new screen went in and also the dash was sorted too. They also found a rattle in the door card on the passenger side so they fixed that too. I have to say that I am blown away by the level of service from Lexus.

The car is now rattle free!! Happy days.

Cheers
