Locking/unlocking Beep Sound

Is the car supposed to make a beep sound when the central locking is locked or unlocked? Mine doesn't, but the indicators flash. There seems to be a volume control hidden way under the dashboard but this isn't clicked shut to turn off the beep noise.

Not sure about yours, but my '98 LS400 beeps when I lock it if one of the doors is not closed properly or if hold the button to wind the windows up. It also beeps when I unlock if I hold the button to wind down the windows.

I'm just wondering about a beep when just locking or unlocking normally (i.e. not when a window is open). The manual says it's supposed to beep.

If you continue to press the lock button after the indicators have flashed it will beep. (1998 LS400)
