Rx300 Self Leveling Headlamp Issue

Recommended Posts

A couple of weeks ago I had a warning light flash up telling me that there was a problem with the self leveling headlights on my 2005 RX300. This went off after about a day but whilst out driving last night I noticed that the headlamps are now leveling themselves far too low, making diving in the dark difficult. When I turn the ignition of the car on I see the headlights move & correct themselves so clearly the motors in them are fine.

On speaking to my local dealer, they've said that they would expect that the problem is with a sensor on the back axle & whilst changing it is an easy job the sensor itself is about £200. They did however say that it should be possible to disconnect the sensor & adjust the headlights manually but they've never done this & don't know whether this will give me a permanent warning light on the dashboard.

Has anyone any idea how difficult the sensor disconnection & manual adjustment would be as I'd really prefer to avoid having to shell out for Lexus to replace the part as I'm thinking of changing the car in the near future. Or do you guys have another idea how I could solve my problem?

Regards

Steve

As the SE-L has HID/xenon headlights, there is no manual levelling fitted, unlike regular headlamps where there is usually a 3 or 4 position switch. However, this model also has air suspension to keep the car level, so theoretically the lights would only need one setting anyway.

If they give you a guarantee it will pass the MOT test then I'd be tempted. But I wonder if they have really thought it through?
