Hi all,

I've searched the forums first but I cant find a similar post, so..

The remote key fob for my RX300 is about to split. I don't want to pay main dealer prices for a replacement. Has anyone done a DIY fix on this? I see I can buy the case off eBay, or the case with a blank key (to which I assume I have the key cut at the local locksmiths and replace the electronics from old to new fob).

Just wondered if anyone had been through this scenario before and what your experiences and advice would be.

Many thanks

Tony

I haven't had this poblem, but sometimes the blade can be detached from the fob making a switch into an eBay item easy and cheap.

I checked my 400h key but the blade looks to non detachable, possibly the same with yours.

Shouldn't be a problem getting a blank cut though, then just swap over the electonics part.

Hi,

Very easy to replace.

Buy a blank key from eBay (for about £60), but make sure they are the same type (and length) and have the blade cut at your local locksmith.

Then, swap over the transponder inside the key case, as this will avoid needing your key reprogramming.

You can get the same from your Lexus dealer, but replacement keys are about £120 - as long as the dealer doesn't need to reprogramme the key and gets to keep the new transponder (at least that's the deal that my dealer offered).

Cheers.

Did your local key cutting shop have the 3 button Lexus replacement though? I can see that cutting the blade could be a challenge (although the local keysmith chain I used cut it first time fortunately!), so I'd rather buy the key and cut from the same place.

Mine was broken when I bought the car (2nd hand), bought a replacement from eBay (£8) and get it cut from a van style key cutting service in a retail park for £10. Swapped the transponder and all sorted.

Ironic thing is when I turned up at the caravan style key cutting thing, the guy told me it is very common for Lexus key to break and he even keep few of them as spare and it only cost £6.

I bought a replacement from eBay (£4) and got it cut for £10. Swapped the transponder and all was sorted.

I cut mine from http://www.a1seecure.co.uk/ - -- Tel No: 020 8301 3439

The have a vey nice machine that will copy/scan and cut the key all in one go, no wasting upto 3 key before getting it right

Good luck
