Can anyone point me in the best direction to sort this problem on my 1991 LS400

I assume by caput you mean the display has gone all black and is unreadable as opposed to the backlighting has failed?

You have several choices, you may be able to buy a new display from the US but make sure it is for the RHD model (see link below) and then either fit it yourself or get someone with the necessary skills to do so ( fitting instructions are on the web), a member on this forum (Chris Vince) repairs them so you could send a PM to make enquiries or look for one that works in a breakers yard
