Hello

I have my eye on a IS220d 2009 59 plate with low mileage. However after reading some of the problems with head gasket and EGR I am having second thoughts.

My question is, was it only the earlier diesel models that were effected and are the later lower emission units (148g/km) any better.

Thanks

John

As I understand it the early models up to 08 are the most susceptible. There may well be some 09 and later problems...I honestly don't know.

Your biggest concern should be the amount of miles you are driving. If you only do small mileage..say, around 8K miles per year then diesel i fear is NOT the way to go. The diesel engine needs to get good and hot to get everything working properly. If not it wiil soot itself up with dire consequences.

Have you driven both the 220d and the 250 Auto?

well my experience is a little different. my 220d went in over xmas for some warranty work and they gave me a 59 250 auto. i spent shed loads of money on fuel because of my short journeys, loads more than my 220d would have used.

i dont seem to be having issues with soot up egr as i once a week give it a blast up the motoway for about an hour.

Glad you got one of the economical 220's, a lot are not. I was lucky mine was good too. Trouble was my job change meant I would only do 6K miles per year. Just not enough in my book for that diesel engine. Gave car to my son who is doing 20K+ per year.

as i once a week give it a blast up the motoway for about an hour.

That's probably a very wise thing to do. Keep an eye on that EGR. It is quite easy to remove and clean as a DIY project. Take maybe 40 mins first time.

Thanks for the replies

I will probably be doing about 12000 milles a year so can justify a diesel, and I will do a far bit of motoway driving so can hopefully can keep the EGR in good order

Thanks

I was in the same position not to long ago and was getting very nervous about the 220d after reading about all the problems,However I took the plunge and I'm very happy.

Have you looked at a approved lexus?I found them not much more expensive but you get a good warranty & back up.

Hope all goes well.
