What is the "charcoal canister"?

The car (IS250 F-Sport) has just had its 20k/2 year service.

The service checklist (ticked) said "Inspect charcoal canister every 2 years or 30k miles"

I should have asked them at the time, I know.

It's basically a vapour trap from the fuel system to stop fuel being evaporated into the air. I wouldn't get too worried about it

Ok, thanks.

<..... stop fuel being evaporated into the air. >

So that we can't smell it in the cabin, right?

"mine has an in from the tank side, an out to the valve then to the intake, and underneath one open to the air. "

Interesting, isn't it.

I think the name "canister" somewhat understates what magic this component does on our cars!
