Timing Belt And Pump Change, Pics Of Old Parts

Recommended Posts

My belt had been changed at:-

64k and 5 years

76K later after 3 years

and was currently sitting at 76k and 8 years

With a grand total on the car of 204494 miles

The general consensus seems to be the belt is probably good for 100k miles and 10 years, with the only real failure mode being when the water pump seizes.

Having heard the odd water pump squeal on occasion, I was concerned that I may be on the original waterpump (no note of it being changed in the book stamps) and having had a good quote of £430 I decided it was time!

Here's all the bits I got back, looks like the new pump was a Circoli, as they put the old bits in the box.

One of the idlers seemed fine, one a little noisy, and the pump has a definate "tug" when you start to turn it, as if the seal is sticky.

The belt looks like new after 76000 miles.

Would anyone care to comment on the pump- does it look like an original?

I got it done in the local HGV MOT garage, I took my elderly campervan there for an MOT, expecting it to be staffed by big guys walking around with hammers, I found a bunch of intelligent friendly chaps who welded my van fixed the brakes and charged less than the quote they gave me. So they got the work and did it in one day as promised.

Ian, I think you got a real bargain there. I've just paid £625 for the same job at an independant jap car specialist, although I did get a new hydraulic tensioner (this is not the pulley) with mine rather than re-using the old one. I got fresh toyota antifreeze put in too. I called my nearest Lexus dealer and they quoted me £1135 and that didn't include the two new pulleys! It was a no brainer.

Circoli is not OEM however it does come with a 2 year manufacture warranty and also has metal impellers which is better than the original one

Allegedly they also have SKF bearings in them too

Good price though - it is cheaper than if the belt snaps !!!!

Brian,

Yep, that was too good a price to pass, mind you, that was the before VAT price...

No new tensioner for me, main thing was the pump.

From what Adam says, the original pump had plastic impellers, so perhaps I was running on the original, after 200k miles.

I swear the engine is even quieter, I thought it had stalled today when I started it, mind you, there was rain pattering on the roof.

So perhaps the new pump and idlers are quieter
