Hi all,

I am very new to this forum (joined today), and was seeking advice from anyone.

I have a Lexus IS200 SE (05 Plate) where the boot does not fully open when the button on the key is pressed. Once pressed, it clicks open and that’s it. I then have to hold it up (or prop it on my shoulder) to access the contents of the boot... Not great!

I have asked the main dealers and the cost to repair this is expensive to say the least, just under £400 (which does not include the paint work).

It has been advised that I require torsion bars and brackets. However, I have managed to obtain the whole item from a local car dismantler yesterday evening at a fraction of the cost, but the only issue now is to fit it in.

I believe that this can only be done by taking out the back seats (which are full leathers), take out the parcel shelf, remove the centre pillars, and then I’ll have access to the boot space?!?

What I am asking for is; if anyone has a step-by-step guide (possibly with screenshots and/or a video guide) so I can attempt to do this myself.

I know this is a lot to ask for, but a guide would be hugely appreciated to get my boot crisis resolved.

I look forward to your responses.

Ok, first of all you cant access the boot by removing the rear seats as there's a bulkhead there!

Second, do you have a high 3 bar boot spoiler (see pic)

Or this style?

If you have the 3 bar one it wont open fully due to the extra weight of the bigger spoiler!

If you have either of those nip and grab 2 x 5mm bolts and place them in the slot where the torsion bars fit into the hinge (see pic)

Hi I think the problem os that the hinges crack where the torsion bar fits into the slot that's bolted to the body you can see in picture above the wrench so the boot wont pop up or stay up I've done loads of these and you do have to remove the rear seat and parcel shelf to gain access to the bolts that hold them to the body. Lexus thought it was a Good idea to bolt them that way!!

I now see what the op ment by removing the rear seat's as the nuts are welded to the hing!

Id be tempted to try and undo them from the boot without removing the seats by using and pair of mole grips.

Mine are cracked so if they were welded and a plate added that would maybe help the boot open even more?

Sorry only just got back! I still think you'll have to take seats and parcelshelf out to restart bolts.when I worked at main dealers seem to remember stiffer torsion bars were available for is boot lids with spoilers to help lift them higher

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the replies.

jomo, the spoiler I have is more like the second picture you posted.

I will provide pictures in due course.

Im a complete novice at all this, so is anyone willing to help a poor lost soul to get this fixed ?

Im willing to travel to whereever you guys are, and offer reasonable labour costs.

Alternitively, although I paid for and sourced for the whole kit (torsion bars and brackets) at a dismantlers, im cosidering installing gas struts to open up the boot.

After looking at other peoples installations online, it doesnt look too bad to install myself (fingers crossed)... Im just left with a fairly new peice of boot kit, which I would then need to get rid off or give away!

Hi 555Ltd,

Thank you very much for your reply. With regards to the cost, how much will I be looking at approximately, as I need to factor in the cost of getting to and from Sheffield on top too.

If its reasonable, when are you free to do it? Im unfortunately only available on weekends.

Hear from you soon mate
