Dull Rumble, Humming Noise

Recommended Posts

Hello all

Just started to hear a dull humm and rumble coming from the driver side rear wheel.

I'm thinking wheel bearing.

Car has done 76000 miles with full dealer service history.

Dealer now suggest renewing the bearing and the hub, a cost of over £750!

Getting fed up of playing the main dealer think of a number game.

Does this sound like a bearing problem to anyone here?

Can anyone suggest a quality independant in the Macclesfield, Cheshire area?

Many thanks.

Certainly the way you have described it sounds like a bearing - I looked at prices for the fronts (just the part) a few weeks ago as I had a suspicious noise from the front passenger side - stripped the caliper down and traced the noise back to a brake pad guide tab on the caliper not seated properly, rubbing on the disc and causing a metal to metal grind / rumble noise at low speeds.

Don't think that will be your issue though.

I looked at prices of replacement front bearings at around £120 per side, for the front. The price for the rear is roughly the same and they come in assembled kit form (bolt on / bolt off (nothing is ever that simple though) These prices were not OEM

I suspect the price Lexus has given you is to do both sides as, some one correct me if I am wrong, they would do these in pairs? If not then that's a fair old whack for a job that an indie garage can do for around a fraction of the cost.

JUST NOTICED YOU HAVE AN RX - the above was for an IS 250, looking at the web then the bearing cost is approx. the same.

Hello thanks for your help.

The noise turned out to be the drivers rear wheel bearing starting to fail.

Took it to a local Aston Martin independant specilest who will work on any car. Bridge Mill Motors in Macclesfield.

They found the problem and fitted a new bearing and housing for £150+vat.

A significant saving over my nearest main dealer, who I have now lost all faith in and will not be using again.

Modern day highway men, except you drive to them!

So it's a good recommendation for Bridge Mill Motors from me.

Thanks.
