Does anyone know the standard ride height for a MKIII? What I need is the measurement fron the centre of the rear wheel to the wheel arch. I think the rear springs have softened, but would like to be sure. Tape measures out chaps, if you will so kind.

OR, it could be that your rear springs have broken.

Both mine were broken within 1 loop of the top of both springs, and the car seemed to sit about 2 inches lower than another car of the same year.

I'm convinced it does sit lower, hence the desire for a measurement. However there is no visible evidence of a broken spring

Hi steve, measurements as promised.

front- both 15 3/4"

n/s/r- 14 3/4"

o/s/r- 15"

Done on level ground, 3/4 tank of the expensive stuff, and each corner "bounced" first to settle the spring.

hope that helps,

steve.

I have to say that wasn't what I expected.

I only have 1/4 tank of fuel & very little in the car or boot. I do have full towing electrics and bracket & the swan neck is always attached so I would guess that that would compensate for the weight of fuel.

What I was expecting to find that the front was pretty much the same as yours & that the rear was lower. But what Ive got is the front 1/4 - 1/2" higher & the rear the same

The problem I have is that the towing bracket is low & is particularly good at ploughing furrows where the arrival &/or departure angle is steep; multistory carparks & ferrys are a favourite & some sleeping policemen.

Do I conclude that there is nothing wrong with the car; its just the towing bracket so live with it. Or have the rear springs softened and hence the greater height at the front (but then the distance is the same as yours).

Any other contributions with measurements may well prove the point either way. One particularly good one would be from someone who has fitted new standard springs.

It does help because its confirming to me that there is nothing wrong with the car. Looking out of the window, the swan neck protrudes about 4" or so below the bumber. I could remove it but I would feel naked without it and the electrics would then be the lowest point.
