  1. All good stuff, not quite my symptoms, the car runs very, very, rich, and the cats were glowimg red hot with unburnt fuel just had a good look at the American forum, top of the list is an HT coil failed Feels like it is running on 4 cylinders, and apparently this problem will cause both cats to overheat- ECU must get confused Thanks for responding
  2. Spot on, it is a single point conversion, that's good to know, it was the LPG installers- I thought boy racers had been at it. Not impressed with setting a car up with no filter. There were a fair few bugs caught in the matrix in front of the AFM, but I cleaned it and fitted a filter, about 6 days before the engine started running rough
  3. Agree it is fiddly, but when I initially got it, there was no filter at all, and extra holes drilled in the filter housing and it ran fine! It's one of the things I re-checked tonight, still got my fault Thanks for responding
  4. Just back in from re-checking everything I did recently, looked for anything unusual, reseated a few connectors round about where I was last working, and it still runs rough and a very strong smell of pertol from the exhausts. Both downpipes got warm, though, so its not as if one bank has quit. I just did this as I was sitting at the traffic lights, beats me, for the moment
  5. Yes you. If you can work a spanner and are not afraid to get your hands dirty, then you are the best one to work on your car. At least you know you wont get ripped off, and you wont take shortcuts or get shoddy workmanship. I completely agree, unfortunately, I don't know what's wrong with it! Just back in from re-checking everything I did recently, looked for anything unusual, reseated a few connectors round about where I was working, and it still runs rough and a very strong smell of pertol from the exhausts. 6. I'm reposting here, as well as the the main forum, as it seem a bit more technical here, apologies for double posting, but I need some help on this one, trying everything My engine is running very rough, almost no power, got home in clouds of smoke, both cats were red hot and glowing under the car, bit scarry. I was sitting at the lights, about 1 minute after starting, when the idle suddenly dropped, and the engine went rough. Limped home, and checked the error codes (its a '92 ) 21 and 28, which according to a note I picked up on this or the American board, is both oxygen sensors, and a 63 from the o/d light, which is open or short on no.2 solenoid. Started the car again, still running rough I had the same codes 3 days ago, which was the first time I had checked them and I cleared them, so they are not old codes. I figure the oxy sensor codes could be down to the lpg conversion? I was on LPG when the problem started, and I switched to petrol for the 10 minute run home. I had the air cleaner and air flow sensor assembly off prior, as I was fixing the leak at the power steering pump. The car started fine and did the 10 minute run out with no problems. The car is new to me, only had the car a few weeks, so not overly familiar with it, other than reading lots on this forum. Hopefully someone will recognise the symptoms, any info very gratefully received
  7. I would agree about looking at the area worked on recently, although the car ran fine for about 20 minutes afterwards. The air flow plug looks fine, I did leave a big Jubliee clip a bit loose, but cant see that causing my problem. I will be having another look this evening. Anyone know a good Lexus mechanic in Glasgow?
  8. Just tried disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes, to reset the ECU, if thats how you do it. No change, engine starts well enough, but runs very rough, with a strong smell of unburnt fuel. Both cat converters were red hot last night, so am I right in thinking there was unburnt fuel on both engine banks, so its not like one plug has stopped firing Keep the suggestions coming, I'm up against it here....
  9. I thought red hot cat converters were caused by an excess of unburnt fuel, (as opposed to red hot exhausts. caused by a lean mixture) ? I will try disconnecting the battery for 10 mins- that is how to reset the ECU? Yes, it started running rough on LPG, so I switched to petrol, no change, still rough, I drove home on petrol
  10. There's a first aid box under the passemger seat ? My rattle seems to be from the coin holder area, but I have a worse problem at the moment- engine suddenly runing rough and no power- and red hot glowing cats under the car!
  11. It is burgundy, slightly metalic in the sun. I got it from a guy in Fofrar, so probably not the same one
  12. If its any consolation. I'm having problems with my new purchase too! (See post on engine running rough)
  13. I'm as upset as Chrali at the moment, engine is running very rough, almost no power, got home in clouds of smoke, both cats were red hot and glowing under the car, bit scarry. 14. It is that kind of noise, a light rattle- not my keys, though. You wouldn't notice it in an "ordinary" car
  15. There was a good summer's worth of bugs in that metal matrix thingie next to the AFM, I blew it out gently with an air line I do get a clunk going over a bump on full lock, just got the car, so haven't investigated underneath yet. So far I have resealed the gas manifold ( lpg ) cleaned the AFM and fittted a filter. Pulls a bit better and even smoother now, still to fix the fast tickover- just under 1000- and I suspect my light brown transmision fluid needs changing
  16. Ian, Cheers mate for the help. looking at the link my socket looks just like the one on the earlier models as you have pointed out, "it's the socket i have the problem with now!" not looking as thou i can use a shorting link has to be a code reader. I need a reader with this socket/plug connection.. There must be a fly lead that will connect to the standard connection as used on the OBDII ? I will keep looking ! John I have just used the other diagnostic socket, the one on the engine, on my car it is a rectangular socket, not like the round one inside the car. Might be worth having a look at your under bonnet socket
  17. Hi Ruud, I'm in the West End of Glasgow. I guess I need to hang out the window on a bumpy road
  18. Hi, Love my "new"LS, (92) I'm busy fixing bits and pieces, new air filter fitted today (There wasn't one in there, which isn't the best, but the engine doesn't seem to have come to any harm ) It drives beautifullly, but for an annoying little rattle when going over road bumps, which detracts from the general majestic progress these cars make. Seems to be coming from the lower dash, around the coin holder area. These things can be a bugger to track down, so I was wondering if there is anything known to cause this?
  19. http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/intro/codereading.html Looks like yours will be OBDII, according to this link. Ian
  20. Hi, I'm another newbie and was looking for the same thing. My LS400 is a 92, which makes it OBD1, as opposed to the much more sophisticated OBD2. OBD1 doesnt seem to have readers, each manufacturer has a slightly different set up and you need a reader per manufacturer, or an expensive garage one to read them all. The American market also seems to use a different connector. I think we are stuck with the paperclip and count the flashing light proceedure Ian
  21. Ah, got the lights sused now, when you dim the panel lights during the day, the light sensor says no, and turns them up again Clever...
  22. Hi all, Just got my magnificent LS400 5 days ago and absolutely love it, got LPG into the bargain, which it certainly was. I have the usual collection of things to fix, with any just-aquired car, the one at the top of the list is my temp gauge. It moves a millimeter or 2 when the ignition is turned on so doesn't appear to be physically stuck. It then just sits there, a bit below the begining of the markings. Everything else works fine, all is illuminated. I did notice that if I set the light dimmer, then turn on the lights, the panel illuminates on low for a few secs and then goes to fully lit. Seems ok after a run, presumably because something has warmed up? I have had a hunt round the forums, and our American friends seem to have a lot more temp related problems, and it seems the thing to do is replace some caps and check for dry joints on the instrument cct. boards, which I can do. I have ordered a CD from Ebay, will this have enough cct diagrams to check the temp sender? Any specific info on the temp gauge gratefully received
  23. Hi all.... Summer (I hope!) is on the way and I really diddnt want to look at the usual blank a/c panel on my Mk1, guessing the temperature setpoint or lowering the control and counting the number of beeps to set it to my preferred temperature. I have lived with this fault because I am not willing to pay the silly money for the usual repair or the stupid money for a new panel from Lexus. My car only being worth £600 on a good day, pushed me into taking out the control panel and having a poke about. The installed panel is unique in it`s application, but not in it`s dimensions...so a small 3.5 digit display was orderd from RS. I took a couple of pics while I modified the unit to accept the display:- Now that's clever, it must have taken you a while to work out the pinouts, surely? If you could sort out a clock, too, that would be a great service to us all
  24. Google ! I have always wanted a V8 - I believe everyone should own a V8 at some point in their lives- and I heard good things about Lexus, so I pick my LS 400 up this weekend Ebay, fingers crossed..
