If your DVLA local office is anything like mine, your best bet is to get there 15 minutes before it opens so that your one of the first in the queue. I think that they all open at 9 o'clock. Which is your nearest one? Reading? The full list is here if you don't know where it is.

Yes, they can usually put your private plate on retention and assign a new one on the same day. You might need to leave it with them for a couple of days if they are busy, but that would be the longest I would have thought. The longest I have ever had to wait was 2 days, the quickest about 2 hours (you can call back later to pick it up usually, you don't have to sit in the waiting room!). As I said before, if the car has never had a standard (non-cherished) plate, they can't do it there and then, and in that situation it can take about a fortnight. I would say that as long as your car has had a standard plate on it at some point in its history, the only issue you will have to worry about is getting the new keeper's details on the V5, as you will have to wait until the V5 with the new number is sent to you, then fill in the change of owner stuff, then send it back to Swansea again so that the new owner gets the V5.... I think that I have made that sound more complicated than it is

Barry, when I sold my GS, it still had my private plate on it. I was advised by the DVLA that there was no way of transferring a number plate and also changing the registered keeper in one transaction. What the DVLA advised me to do, was to speak to the guy who bought the car and tell him that I would sort out the change of registered keeper after the new V5 had been sent to me. He had already seen the old V5 when he agreed to buy the car so he knew it was pucka. The only thing to be aware of if you do this that you could end up with someone elses speeding/parking tickets as you are still the registered keeper in the interim period, but as long as you get a decent receipt for the car you can prove that you weren't the driver, so should be able to resolve the situation if it arises. It's not an ideal situation, but its probably the only way around it if you need to sell the car straight away, and also keep the plate. You can usually get a new tax disc and a stamp with the new number plate on the same day at the DVLA, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue for the purchaser as the V5 is not a proof of vehicle ownership anyway. This situation is slightly different if the car has only ever had cherished plates on it from new... If this is the case you had better speak to Zee - he's just been through this.

Me too! I passed second time (as all the best drivers do), and I knew I had before the examiner told me. Everything just seemed to go right on the day, and I was far more confident. I have got my LGV theory test next Friday, so am just brushing up on the hazard perception at the moment. My practical Class C test will be in about a months time all being well. Hope I don't fail that too many times... It costs about £200 quid each time by after the instructor has taken his cut for lending his truck! Baby Shake - Hard luck this time, but I'm sure you'll get there in the end if you keep practicing! :)

A bit I know, but what was causing your unit to take a long time to acquire satellites? Mine is very slow sometimes too.

Some of the real questions aren't much better than that!

I have got an old LGV book and the questions in this are different to those for the car test except for road signs and stuff. The questions are all things like You are driving along a motorway in a lorry and a loud warning buzzer sounds in the cab. What could this mean? A - Low air pressure B - Engine oil pressure C - Your microwave lasagne is ready D - You need to stop for a break. I'm sure that the questions haven't changed much since this book came out, but I'll probably get a new one anyway to be sure. Like I said, its the hazard perception bit that I was worried about.

A friend of mine just took his theory test and had one of his clips disqualified for that reason. I need to know what 'too many times' is though

I remember thinking after I passed my driving test that I was glad that I wouldn't have to go through it ever again. Anyway, almost 10 years on, I have decided that it might be fun to take my LGV Class C test. My theory test is booked for a couple of weeks time. The questions don't look like they'll pose too much of a problem, but the hazard perception bit looks like it might be a bit more troublesome. It seems to me that my idea of what a hazard is might be different from what is expected. Has anyone taken the hazard perception test recently? If so, did you get any of the training materials for it? I'm going for an assessment drive tomorrow evening with an instructor, so if anyone is around the Nottingham area tomorrow evening, make sure you keep out of the way af any trucks you see with 'L' plates on!
